The only solution to the current political crisis is an early election, representative of the Group of Unaffiliated MPs Robert Alecu said at Cotroceni Palace on Thursday.

'In May, during the first consultations, I told the President that the only solution was an early election. Today, 135 days after we got a dismissed government, I told him the same thing, only today nobody laughed anymore. It has been more than four months since the Bolojan Government has been unable to take substantive decisions. If we had been listened to more than four months ago, we could have had a Parliament reflecting the weight and percentages of the popular vote and we would have had a legitimate government. If the President's proposal today does not secure a majority, I told the President not to delay any longer the implementation of Article 89 of the Romanian Constitution and to call an early election,' he said.

Alecu said that unaffiliated MPs do not negotiate 'as a bloc.'

'There is a widespread idea that unaffiliated MPs form a single bloc and that negotiations are conducted with them as a bloc but (...) my vote and my party's support are not negotiable in exchange for positions and are not negotiable in exchange for benefits,' he said.

However, he added that if a prime minister is nominated, his party's vote will be needed and it will vote only if their governing programme is implemented.

Earlier, the President held talks with representatives of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), the National Liberal Party (PNL), the Save Romania Union (USR), the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR), the parliamentary group of national minorities, the Party of Young People (POT), the United for Romania parliamentary group and the PACE - Romania First parliamentary group as part of consultations launched to nominate a candidate for prime minister.
