International Theatre Festival for Young Audiences in Iasi to unfold under 'Power and Vulnerability' theme
The 18th edition of the International Theatre Festival for Young Audiences Iasi (FITPTI), accredited by the European Festivals Association in Brussels with the 'Remarkable Festival' label, will take place between 2 and 8 October, under the theme 'Power and Vulnerability.'
According to a press release from the organisers, the event brings together a diverse programme featuring indoor and outdoor theatre performances, live art, exhibitions, film screenings, walking act parades, student theatre and performative readings.
The festival includes shows produced by companies from Argentina, Austria, Bulgaria, China, Croatia, Switzerland, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the United Kingdom, the Republic of Moldova, Romania, Spain and Sweden, which will be staged in 18 venues across Iasi.
'We chose this theme with the idea of exploring these poles of individual and social life, power and vulnerability, strength and weakness, whose dynamics have intensified in today's world. Theatre reflects reality in various ways, filtering it aesthetically and offering a mirror which, even in the case of comedy, provokes thought. We shaped this event, now coming of age, starting from this premise, building a rich, diverse and appealing programme for our fans aged from 2 to 100 and beyond. At FITPTI, we're not interested in your ID number, we care about your curiosity, openness and joy,' said theatre critic Oltita Cintec, FITPTI's curator.
According to the same source, the Romanian theatre scene will be represented by prestigious state theatres, such as 'Radu Stanca' National Theatre of Sibiu, 'Lucian Blaga' National Theatre of Cluj-Napoca, Nottara Theatre of Bucharest, Arcub Bucharest, 'Fani Tardini' Theatre of Galati, 'Andrei Muresanu' Theatre of Sfantu Gheorghe, Municipal Theatre of Baia Mare, Gong Theatre Sibiu, Puck Theatre of Cluj-Napoca, and 'Ion Creanga' Theatre of Bucharest, as well as by independent companies like the Political Theatre Platform Bucharest, Zbeng Cultural Cluj-Napoca, AnimArt Cluj-Napoca, BIS Theatre Sibiu, and Var Cultural. Directors featured include Radu Afrim, Vlad Cristache, Ada Milea, Alexandru Mazgareanu, Leta Popescu, David Schwartz, and Doru Vatavului.
The teaser for FITPTI 2025 is a two-part prologue scheduled for 20 and 27 September at 19:00, featuring two exceptional productions.
One of them is 'Queen of the Night,' written and directed by Leta Popescu, with the team from 'Fani Tardini' Theatre of Galati. The show received four UNITER Award nominations: Best Performance, Best Romanian Script in a Premiere, Best Music and Best Leading Actress - Oana Mogos, who also won the award. The script highlights an often overlooked reality in Romania: the countryside, in a nostalgic-comic tone reminiscent of holidays spent with relatives there.
The second performance, 'How Mr Gherase Fell in Love with Clara Smith,' written by Cosmin Stanila and directed by Doru Vatavului, tackles the lover-boy/girl manipulation tactic, which, although widely exposed, continues to make victims online. The production by 'Lucian Blaga' National Theatre of Cluj-Napoca blends surprise and humour while addressing serious themes of manipulation, loneliness and the need for love, say the organisers.
