Salaj Holocaust Memorial Museum hosts event marking 80 years since liberation of Nazi concentration camps

'The Voice of Freedom' was heard on Sunday evening at the Northern Transylvania Holocaust Memorial Museum, located in the former synagogue of Simleu Silvaniei, through the voice of actress Maia Morgenstern, who performed alongside violinist Diana Jipa and pianist Stefan Doniga in a commemorative event marking 80 years since the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps and 20 years of the museum's activity (2005-2025).

The event was attended by local and county authorities, as well as one of the museum's founders, Alex Hecht, founding president of the museum and son of Holocaust survivors.

'It is such a great joy to see this synagogue full again, as it once was, before the Holocaust. (...) This sacred space was transformed, 20 years ago, into the first functional Holocaust museum in the country. Since then, our institution has carried out many multidisciplinary projects. (...) Today's emotional event, The Voice of Freedom, marks 80 years since the end of the Holocaust, 1945-2025, and represents the beginning of a series of multi-curricular activities that honor these 20 years of the museum's existence. On the anniversary date, September 11, the museum will host an important gala for all of us. Over these two decades, we have had the support of many national and international partners,' said Daniel Stejeran, director of the Holocaust Museum, at the opening of the event.

The programme included a series of monologues by actress Maia Morgenstern, largely based on her childhood experiences during the communist era as the daughter of a Jewish family, as well as literary moments paying tribute to Holocaust victims, accompanied by music from violinist Diana Jipa and pianist Stefan Doniga.

The event opened with a piano performance by Miriam Alice Vultur, a young artist aged 10.

The Voice of Freedom was organised by the Northern Transylvania Holocaust Memorial Museum, Simleu Silvaniei City Hall, Teatralis Association - Gabriel Stancu, InnoVate Production and the Salaj County Centre for Culture and Art, in partnership with the Salaj County Council, Salaj County Directorate for Culture, 'Ioan Sima' Art High School of Zalau, Silvan Art Simleu Silvaniei Association, along with other partners and sponsors.
