Romania's longest cable-stayed bridge opens in Satu Mare
The Transylvania Bridge over the Somes River, Romania's longest cable-stayed bridge and the largest public investment in the last 30 years, opened on Friday in Satu Mare. City mayor Kereskenyi Gabor declared at the official opening ceremony that a page of history is being written, as the construction 'is not just a bridge, but a symbol of progress, unity and long-term vision. The Transylvania Bridge is more than a structure made of concrete, steel and iron. It is a new symbol of Satmar, a marvel of engineering and an economic landmark for the entire city, a project that will dwell in our memory for generations.'
Development Minister Cseke Attila said that with this construction, which will mark the image of the municipality from now on, Satu Mare joins the select club of cities featuring cable-stayed bridges.
The construction project, worth approximately RON 200 million, began in May 2020 and has a 15-year warranty period.
According to builder Strabag, the 644-meter long four-lane bridge is one of the most complex and ambitious infrastructure projects in Romania; featuring a harp-shaped design, supported by two 73-meter-high pillars and 56 high-strength steel cables, it weighs 227 tons and has a load capacity of over 12,000 tons.
