Chamber of Commerce representatives discuss EU-Mercosur agreement with Panama officials

Representatives of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Romania (CCIR) discussed with officials from the Government of the Republic of Panama various aspects regarding bilateral cooperation in areas with significant economic potential, according to a press release sent to AGERPRES on Wednesday.

Additionally, Romanian officials and members of the Panamanian Government discussed the impact of the European Union (EU) - Mercosur trade agreement on the economies of the two countries (negotiations completed at the end of last year).

According to the quoted source, the president of CCIR, Mihai Daraban, along with the organisation's secretary-general, Ovidiu Silaghi, held an official meeting with representatives of the Government of the Republic of Panama, an event organised at the Panama Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The CCIR leadership was accompanied by Romania's Ambassador to the Republic of Colombia Manuel Plesa.

'The discussions between Romanian officials and the Panamanian Government, with the participation of representatives of the companies in the economic mission delegation to Panama, focused on aspects regarding bilateral cooperation in various areas with significant economic potential, as well as on analysing the effect of the EU - Mercosur trade agreement (negotiations for which were completed at the end of last year) on the economies of the two states,' the release reads.

In this regard, specific discussions were held with representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce of Panama, the National Secretariat for Energy and the Ministry of Tourism of Panama.

'The completion of the EU-Mercosur trade agreement marks a historic milestone in strengthening the ties between these two regions, representing markets with over 700 million consumers, which could generate economic growth and a significant number of new jobs. At the same time, we are aware of controversies related to the agreement's impact on the food industry, with many farmers in EU countries expressing concerns about potential unfair competition. For this reason, as the main organisation promoting the interests of business people in Romania, CCIR aims to clarify, through such discussions, any issues that may arise in the economic relations between the involved business environments,' CCIR President Mihai Daraban is quoted in the release as saying.
