ICI Bucharest promotes Romania-Japan cooperation in research, AI testing and technology transfer
Cooperation between Romania and Japan could take the form of joint research projects, testing AI solutions and technology transfer to industry, the National Institute for Research and Development in Informatics - ICI Bucharest said in a Facebook post on Monday.
ICI Bucharest Director General Adrian-Victor Vevera attended the fourth edition of the Romania-Japan Innovation Forum 2026, held in Tokyo from October 20 to 23.
'Access to high-performance digital infrastructure, the availability of specialists and the development of trusted partnerships are essential for organisations seeking to adopt advanced technologies. Cooperation between Romania and Japan can help overcome these challenges through joint research projects, testing AI solutions and technology transfer to industry. ICI Bucharest presented these opportunities at the fourth edition of the Romania-Japan Innovation Forum 2026, held in Japan,' the post said.
During the session titled 'Strategic Innovation, Health & Life Sciences, AI and Research Cooperation,' Adrian-Victor Vevera delivered the presentation 'Building the Romania-Japan Digital Bridge: AI, Innovation and Resilience,' focusing on how the two countries could leverage their resources and expertise to develop joint technology projects.
One of the key messages concerned the importance of connecting computing infrastructure, data and expertise, as these resources increasingly influence productivity, security and the functioning of public services.
The ICI Bucharest head outlined three areas of cooperation: developing pilot projects that combine artificial intelligence with physical world applications; creating testing and validation environments for AI solutions under trusted conditions; and strengthening links between research institutes, universities and companies.
According to ICI Bucharest, particular emphasis was placed on moving from research to practical applications. In this regard, cooperation between Romanian and Japanese organisations could facilitate the testing of technologies in fields such as industry, robotics, mobility and smart infrastructure, as well as the development of projects with commercial potential.
The presentation also addressed the role of trust in developing technology partnerships. Access to data and computing resources must be accompanied by security mechanisms, clear rules for use and validation processes, enabling organisations to experiment with and adopt AI solutions in controlled conditions.
The fourth edition of the Romania-Japan Innovation Forum brought together representatives of public institutions, the research community, universities and companies from both countries. The programme included thematic sessions, business meetings and activities aimed at identifying cooperation opportunities in areas such as artificial intelligence, energy, healthcare and advanced technologies.
