Timisoara exhibition 'Traditional Costume - A World Woven with Symbols' showcases dozens of historic textile pieces
The Banat Village Museum (MSB) in Timisoara will open an exhibition on Thursday featuring more than 80 items of traditional clothing and accessories, including shirts and traditional wraparound skirts dating from the late 19th century, offering visitors a glimpse into the traditional dress of Banat's communities.
The exhibition, entitled 'Adornments from the Collections of the Banat Village Museum Timisoara: Traditional Costume - A World Woven with Symbols', presents traditional clothing as a valuable ethnographic record in which Romanian traditions intertwine with the cultural influences and distinctive features of the region's Serbian, Bulgarian, German (Swabian), Slovak and Hungarian communities.
The costumes on display illustrate the diversity of garments, embroidery, fabrics and ornaments, each preserving meanings associated with identity, age, social status and important occasions in community life. Representative elements of Romanian traditional dress include the opreg (a traditional fringed apron), embroidered shirts, catrinta (a wraparound skirt) and various forms of traditional headwear, while necklaces made of coins, elaborate embroidery and distinctive accessories highlight the characteristics of the other ethnic communities.
'These are among the most fragile items in the Banat Village Museum's collection. They are very old textiles that need to be kept in a carefully controlled environment; otherwise, they can lose their colour and structural integrity. They are made from biodegradable materials, including hemp and wool. If they are not kept in appropriate conditions, they can deteriorate very easily. But we monitor them and intervene where necessary,' MSB curator Catalin Balaci told AGERPRES.
Stepping into the exhibition is like entering a fairytale world, filled with dowry chests made from different types of wood, either left in their natural colours or painted and decorated with floral motifs, alongside textiles, brocades, antique lace, embroidery, traditional aprons, blouses, wraparound skirts, shirts, men's trousers and belts. Having once been worn at village dances, weddings, communal gatherings and religious services, these garments have now earned their rest, although some, with their natural colours still so vibrant, seem almost ready to come alive again, dressing young men and women for festive occasions.
'Precisely because they are so delicate, we keep them in storage and bring them out only very rarely, on a rotating basis. We cannot display them for too long, otherwise they deteriorate. They include textiles, garments, short woollen coats, sheepskin jackets, waistcoats, traditional woollen trousers, towels, decorative wall hangings, tablecloths, household textiles and curtains,' the curator explained.
The exhibition also features objects reflecting traditional domestic life, including dowry chests, weaving looms and kilim rugs, testifying to the skill, patience and creativity of the generations that kept these crafts alive.
Through the value and diversity of the items brought together, the exhibition draws public attention to a heritage that speaks of tradition, identity and the cultural coexistence characteristic of Banat.
'The Banat Village Museum's collections include numerous items of exceptional cultural value. Through this exhibition, we are bringing some of these treasures back into the public eye, telling the story of the identity, traditions and diversity of Banat's communities. We want the heritage preserved in the museum's collections to have as visible a presence as possible in the cultural life of the community,' said Radu Trifan, manager of the Banat Village Museum.
For visitors, the Banat Village Museum in Timisoara evokes childhood memories of life in the countryside, in their grandparents' homes. The institution houses more than 13,000 heritage objects, some dating back to the 18th century.
Even the museum's restorers know relatively little about the stories behind these treasures, as many came from donations by descendants of their original owners or from people who bought old houses and discovered traditional skirts, waistcoats or aprons in the attics.
'Essentially, we know who owned them and where they came from. We know that an object comes from a particular place, that we bought it from a certain person, that we acquired it through a sale and purchase agreement or a transfer, or that it belongs to a particular collection. We might have information such as 'the very old collection of the Banat Museum', but nothing more. We do not know the history of every object. Surprisingly, however, when we began undoing old seams or linings, we often came across all sorts of unexpected discoveries: notes, handkerchiefs and other material traces,' the MSB restorers said.
Through the cultural heritage it preserves and presents to visitors, the Banat Village Museum remains a living chapter in the history of Banat, bearing witness to the traditional folk culture of Romanians and the region's ethnic minorities and fostering a harmonious dialogue between communities.
The exhibition will open on Thursday at 13:00 and remain on display until December 31. It can be visited from Wednesday to Sunday, between 09:00 and 17:00. AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Otilia Halunga; EN - writing by: Simona Iacob)
