Romanian surgeons reconstruct ear of patient born with rare congenital malformation

A multidisciplinary medical team at Bistrita County Emergency Clinical Hospital has successfully performed an exceptionally rare and complex surgical procedure to reconstruct the ear of a patient born with a congenital malformation, offering the prospect of improved hearing, the hospital announced on Monday.

'Through this highly precise procedure, specialists have restored not only the appearance of a young patient's ear but also the prospect of a significant improvement in her hearing. The patient, born with a rare congenital malformation - anotia/microtia, characterised in this case by the absence of the external ear and ear canal - underwent a complex reconstructive procedure usually performed at specialised university medical centres. During this major operation, the external ear was reconstructed using exclusively the patient's own tissues,' the hospital said in a press release.

The medical team comprised Dr Mihaela Ioana Albu, a senior plastic surgeon who coordinated the procedure; Dr Adrian Alexandru Demian, a senior ENT specialist; Dr Vlad Beleuzu, a thoracic surgery specialist; and Dr Justin Dodane, an anaesthesia and intensive care specialist.

'Cases of this kind are extremely challenging because the ear has one of the most complex shapes in the human body, and reconstructing it from rib cartilage requires not only advanced surgical skills but also an exceptional artistic eye. The fact that we have been able to provide this comprehensive treatment, addressing both appearance and function, demonstrates that medicine can achieve the highest standards when a dedicated multidisciplinary team works together,' Dr Mihaela Ioana Albu said, as quoted in the press release.

The patient is currently recovering well, with a favourable postoperative course and successful biological integration of the reconstructed ear.

'This operation represents a milestone in reconstructive surgery and demonstrates the importance of collaboration between specialists from different medical disciplines. It also offers hope to patients with complex congenital malformations, who can benefit from advanced treatment options close to home,' the hospital added.
