Romania's National Theatre Festival brings 36 productions to Bucharest under '[...]perfect uman' theme

The 36th edition of Romania's National Theatre Festival (FNT) takes place from Friday until October 25, bringing performances to 24 venues across Bucharest.

According to the Romanian Theatre Union (UNITER), the centrepiece of this year's festival is an official selection of 36 productions chosen by a curatorial team comprising theatre critics Raluca Circiumaru, Alina Epingeac and Sebastian-Vlad Popa. Selected from more than 150 productions viewed, the performances reflect a wide range of perspectives, theatrical approaches and themes from the 2025-2026 season.

This year's theme, '[...]perfectly human', invites reflection on (im)perfection, vulnerability and the ways in which people define their relationships with others, society and technology today.

According to the organisers, FNT36 will feature 88 performances and events grouped into several distinct programme sections.

The 'Republic of Moldova at FNT' section brings two guest productions from Chisinau to Bucharest: 'Richard III', adapted for the stage and directed by Petru Hadarca, produced by the Mihai Eminescu National Theatre, and 'Macbeth', directed by Slava Sambris, produced by the Luceafarul Republican Theatre.

FNT Educational, coordinated by playwright Mihaela Michailov, introduces schoolchildren and teenagers to theatre. Its programme includes 'Desteptarea' (The Awakening) by Doru Vatavului, directed by Bobi Pricop; 'Mandrie' (Pride), with dramaturgy by Ioana Toloarga and texts contributed by the entire creative team, directed by Olivia Grecea; 'Minunatele calatorii ale lui Anghel si Zuzi prin lumea adictiei' (The Wonderful Journeys of Anghel and Zuzi Through the World of Addiction) by Iulia Mirica, directed by Larisa Popa; and 'Zmeie, Basme si Fantasme' (Dragons, Fairy Tales and Phantasms), a choreographic theatre production created by Lari Giorgescu.

The 'FNT - Dialogue of the Arts' section highlights opera and operetta productions, including two performances by the Bucharest National Opera: Georges Bizet's 'Carmen', with stage direction and lighting design by Ada Lupu Hausvater, and Leo Delibes' 'Lakme', directed by Andrei Serban. The programme also features 'Romeo si Julieta', directed by KERO and produced by Bucharest's Ion Dacian National Operetta and Musical Theatre, and 'Elixirul dragostei', directed by Laura Maria Vladoiu and produced by the Ambasadorii Musical Theatre.

The 'HOP at FNT' section features a recital by the winners of the 2026 HOP Young Actor Gala.

The 'FNT in International Dialogue' section includes 'Migration Diary. New York City Edition', a multimedia performance by Carmen Lidia Vidu, produced by La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club in New York in partnership with the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York. Further events organised in partnership with cultural institutes in Bucharest will also be included.

Beyond the performances, FNT36 will offer more than 50 additional events aimed at engaging audiences, including staged readings, debates, conferences, exhibitions, book launches, performance installations, meetings with artists, radio theatre productions and televised theatre performances.

A further 28 cultural venues across Bucharest, already established as part of the festival circuit, will host these opportunities to showcase and reflect on the performing arts, UNITER said. AGERPRES (RO - writing by: AGERPRES; EN - writing by: Simona Iacob)
