Bucharest Photofest: Over 200 artists and 50 events in 10 venues
The 11th edition of the Bucharest Photofest international festival brings between October 9 and 18, under the theme 'Witness', over 200 artists and 50 events in 10 locations of the city, according to organisers.
The theme of the edition, 'Witness', starts from an observation: surrounded and oversaturated with images, we see, but we no longer stop looking. Bucharest Photofest proposes a reflection on how photography captures the strength and resilience of the human spirit, addressing socio-political and cultural themes through powerful visual narratives.
From the besieged Mariupol, documented by the Ukrainian photographer Evgeniy Maloletka, to the interrogation of Toulo Adl Parvar (Iran) on the way people go through the war and the crisis, beyond statistics and figures, and up to the uprooting documented by Vedad Divovic (Bosnia and Herzegovina), the photographers invited to the festival look at the contemporary world through visual testimonies that provoke reflection, lucidity and presence.
The official opening of the festival will take place on Friday, at the Point, and is marked by the collective exhibition 'Witness: Images That Refuse to Forget', by photographers commissioned by UNHCR and the screening of the film 'Minamata', in which Johnny Depp plays the role of the famous photographer W. Eugene Smith, who managed to change a piece of the world through his reportage.
The series of films dedicated to photography continues on October 16 and 17 at Cinema Union, with 'Ernest Cole: Lost And Found' (2024), 'An Underground Bird' directed by Eero Tammi (Finland), 'Finding the Landscape' directed by Carlos Vin Lopes (Germany), 'Forgetting' directed by Antoni Orlof (Poland), 'KIN' directed by Ana Baer, Rocio Luna (Mexico/USA) and 'In Passing' directed by Gaile Garnelyte (Lithuania), which will also feature a Q&A session with the directors.
A component of the festival is the educational one, represented by workshops and masterclasses by professionals as follows: Vedad Divovic (Bosnia & Herzegovina) holds a workshop powered by SONY (10.10 - 'How to Be Lost on Purpose'), No Such Thing as Bad Weather, by Sigurthur Olafur Sigurthsson (Iceland), also powered by SONY. UNHCR Romania collaborates with photographer Justin Quinnell (UK) at OTOTO Station (11.10) for a workshop dedicated to refugees.
The OTOTO Station will also be the venue for the workshop 'Off the Paper' - photo transfer and painting of the SaFitiCumimti Crew, and Joakim Kocjancic (Sweden) invites the people of Bucharest to a Photo Walk to be witnesses on the streets of Bucharest with cameras and mobile phones.
An important section are the workshops for children (@Kulturhaus), carried out in partnership with the Save the Children Organisation and together with photographers Justin Quinnell (UK) and George Ionita (Romania). The workshops represent a dialogue between and with children who face bullying, exclusion, emotional difficulties, violence, displacement, separation from parents.
The works made during the workshops will be presented at ARCUB (15.10), in the exhibition 'In full view of all', an exhibition about children's rights and the responsibility of adults and authorities not to remain passive witnesses.
The focal point of the festival is the Kulturhaus. In the cultural hub there will be seven exhibitions and guided tours by the artists themselves: 'Displacement (Ghorbat)' by Toulo Adl Parvar (Iran) - 10.10, 'SOLVARV' by Joakim Kocjancic (Sweden) - 11.10, 'Still Birth' by Chiara Ernandes (Italy, project curated and presented in Bucharest by Fernanda Prado Vercic (director of Kranj Photo Festival) - 11.10, 'Home of the Perpetually Lost' by Vedad Divovic (Bosnia & Herzegovina) - 13.10, 'Reykjanes Awakens' by Sigurthur Olafur Sigurthsson - 13.10 and 'Archive of Evidence' by Evgeniy Maloletka (Ukraine), on the last day of the festival.
Evgeniy Maloletka, a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer, will also hold a workshop on war photography.
In the focus are also the photography books, on 12.10, at CdRF, the collection albums Bucharest by Joakim Kocjancic, Reykjanes Awekens by Sigurthur Olafur Sigurthsson, but also others will be presented for the first time.
In partnership with the Czech Centre, Bucharest Photofest hosts an exhibition of the artist Eva Bystrianska, 'Searching for Great Beauty' in the presence of the author, and also the exhibition 'Sensitive Data', by the Czech artist Jolana Havelkova - 10.10, CAV Multimedia.
