Romania has demonstrated that it can correct its imbalances even in a severe international context, but political instability directly affects confidence and risk perception in the country, warns interim Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare.
He stated on Thursday, after a meeting with representatives of the financial rating agency Moody's, that the coming weeks are extremely important for protecting the country's investment grade rating.
'Maintaining the investment grade is a strategic stake. It directly influences the financing costs of the state and the economy, investor confidence and Romania's capacity to support investments and development. Romania has demonstrated that it can correct its imbalances even in a severe international context. We will continue to use all the instruments at our disposal to protect the results achieved and to keep Romania on the assumed direction. The stake is Romania's credibility and the capacity to continue developing under conditions of stability', the minister wrote on Facebook.
In the discussions at the Ministry of Finance, the progress recorded in the last year was highlighted, namely the reduction in the deficit and the solid perspective of reaching the 6.2% target in 2026, supported by strict budgetary discipline.
According to Alexandru Nazare, the data confirm that fiscal adjustment produces results and that Romania respects its commitments, but this path must be continued with the same consistency.
'We have achieved consolidation results in a difficult external context, marked by geopolitical tensions, pressures on energy prices and higher financing costs. At the same time, political instability directly affects confidence and risk perception in Romania. These are risks that we have already warned about for several months - the budget execution and the results obtained support our arguments, but these vulnerabilities remain and must be managed responsibly', the quoted source emphasized.
Earlier this week, representatives of the Ministry of Finance also participated in technical discussions with specialists from the Fitch agency, carried out within the framework of the procedure for assessing Romania's sovereign credit rating.
All three major rating agencies (S&P Global Ratings, Moody's and Fitch) have a 'negative' outlook on Romania's sovereign rating, which places the country one step away from a 'junk' rating [not recommended for investments].
