Gov't approves revised version of Interreg VI-A Romania-Bulgaria 2021-2027 Programme
The Government approved on Friday through a memorandum, the revised version of the Interreg VI-A Romania-Bulgaria 2021-2027 Programme and authorised the Minister of Development, Public Works and Administration to finalise the process of negotiating and approving the amendments with the European Commission.
According to a Government release, the programme's total value amounts to 207.45 million euro, of which 163.49 million euro is the European Union contribution, 43.19 million euro national co-financing and 764,007 euro private co-financing.
'In the 2021-2027 period, Romania benefits from non-repayable European financial assistance for the development of European territorial cooperation programmes and projects - cross-border, transnational and interregional - aimed at supporting the balanced development of the European Union's territory through strengthened cooperation and the exchange of best practices between regions. Within the cross-border cooperation component at the European Union's internal borders, Romania is a partner and the Managing Authority of the Interreg VI-A Romania-Bulgaria 2021-2027 Programme,' the release said.
The programme aims to strengthen cohesion and cooperation between regional actors in the Romanian-Bulgarian border area through investments contributing to the sustainable and resilient development of the regional economy, the promotion of connectivity, improved mobility and a higher quality of life for citizens in the region, the quoted source mentioned.
The eligible area of the programme covers seven counties in southern Romania - Mehedinti, Dolj, Olt, Teleorman, Giurgiu, Calarasi and Constanta - and eight districts in northern Bulgaria - Vidin, Vratsa, Montana, Veliko Tarnovo, Pleven, Ruse, Dobrich and Silistra.
'The revision of the programme is necessary in the context of challenges encountered in the implementation of certain projects and the application of the European mechanism for automatic decommitment of unused funds by deadline. The proposed changes aim to accelerate project implementation, efficiently reallocate financial resources and increase the absorption rate of available European funds,' the release said.
The main measures provided include reallocating available funds to areas with a solid portfolio of mature projects; strengthening funding for projects dedicated to biodiversity, environmental protection and pollution reduction; adjusting performance indicators to reflect the current stage of programme implementation; and optimising financial mechanisms for more efficient management of European funds.
