#NadiaYear/ EOC President Spyros Capralos says Nadia Comaneci inspired Greece to develop gymnastics
Attending on Thursday a ceremony at the National Bank of Romania (BNR) for the unveiling of three commemorative coins marking 50 years since Nadia Comaneci's historic perfect 10 for her uneven bars routine, President of the European Olympic Committees Spyros Capralos said that Greece began developing its gymnastics program thanks to the Romanian champion.
Capralos recalled that in 1976, when his country was not yet competing at the Olympic Games, Greeks followed the events on television - especially gymnastics, which he described as a phenomenon at the time. He said that Greece effectively started building its gymnastics tradition in 1976 because of Nadia Comaneci, who inspired everyone.
A former water-polo player, Capralos also shared a personal memory from the 1980 Moscow Olympics, recounting that his greatest wish during those Games was to meet Comaneci. The Greek water-polo team was staying in the Olympic Village, and he told teammates to alert him whenever they saw her heading to training. One day, they did - and he rushed over, asking a teammate to take a photograph with the large cameras used at the time. Although he could not attend the gymnastics competitions because they coincided with his own matches, he said that even in Moscow, where Comaneci did not win the highest number of medals, 'she remained the best'.
The event at the National Bank brought together Romanian Olympic Committee President Mihai Covaliu, EOC President Spyros Capralos, federation leaders, athletes and former gymnasts from Nadia Comaneci's generation.
The National Bank of Romania released on Thursday a gold, a silver and a copper-plated tombac coin dedicated to the anniversary of the first perfect 10 in Olympic history in women's artistic gymnastics.
Sale prices are 7,800 RON for the gold coin, 1,000 RON for the silver coin and 280 RON for the copper-plated tombac coin, each including VAT, the presentation brochure and the certificate of authenticity.
