President Nicusor Dan stated in Brussels on Friday that he had discussions with some European leaders about the political crisis in Romania, emphasizing that he presented them the scenarios he considers most likely, as well as the guarantees that Romania will maintain its pro-European direction.

'Some of them were curious and I explained to them my vision and my vision for the coming days, but especially what I consider important in the medium and long term - that is, I believe that it is not healthy to start the electoral campaign now and I believe that, in this regard, I am trying to do everything in my power so that the conflicts between parties that can lead Romania in a pro-Western direction do not escalate, as, unfortunately, they are at very high levels', stated Nicusor Dan, after participating in the European Council meeting.

Asked why he did not consult with the PNL regarding the appointment of Adrian Vestea to form a new Government and why he chose a liberal and not a PSD representative, he replied: 'My constitutional attribute is to nominate, isn't it? In the period between the moment I nominate and the moment the Government passes or does not pass, in my opinion, any statement regarding this process can be considered an unconstitutional intervention in the process. That is why I am reserved in giving detailed explanations. What I want to tell you is that, in the choice I made, I took into account the two criteria: that is, maintaining the pro-Western direction and I chose that formula of prime minister who would have the best chance of gathering a majority, the best chance of gathering a majority and maintaining the pro-Western direction and, obviously, financial stability'.

He mentioned that Adrian Vestea did not tell him that he would have a majority to support his Government in Parliament. 'Of all the options we had on the table, I considered this to be the closest to a majority,' the head of state explained.

The president added that the situation is unchanged from the position previously expressed that he would not agree to a proposal for a minority Government, with the support of nationalist parties.
