Romania's crude oil production down 8.3% in Q1 of 2026; imports down 30.6%
Romania produced 579,400 tonnes of oil equivalent (toe) of crude oil in the first three months of 2026, down by 52,300 toe (-8.3%) compared with the same period of 2025, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INS) data.
Crude oil imports exceeded 1.576 million toe in the first quarter (Q1) of this year, down by 694,200 toe compared with January-March 2025 (-30.6%).
According to the latest Energy Balance Forecast published by the National Strategy and Prognosis Commission (CNSP), crude oil production is expected to decline by an average annual rate of 2.5% through to 2027.
Therefore, the CNSP estimates crude oil production at 2.68 million toe in 2026 (-2.2% compared with the previous year) and 2.63 million toe in 2027 (-1.9%).
According to the quoted source, the decline is the result of the natural depletion of deposits and the continued operation of existing production units.
