Romania's first domestically bred peony to be named Madrigal, honouring the renowned choir

The University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Bucharest (USAMV) and the Madrigal - Marin Constantin National Chamber Choir have launched a special project dedicated to Romania's national flower: the creation of the 'Madrigal Peony', the first peony variety developed in Romania.

According to the announcement, the breeding work will take place on the USAMV campus, where the university's specialists will oversee the entire process of conception, selection and evaluation. 'For us, this partnership is both a joy and a professional challenge. The Madrigal Peony will bring together horticultural research and cultural identity in a living project with both symbolic and scientific potential,' said Adrian Asanica, Dean of the Faculty of Horticulture.

For the Madrigal Choir, the initiative marks the start of a new development direction: building, over time, the Madrigal Floralia Collection. As part of this effort, the choir conducted by Anna Ungureanu will give a special recital dedicated to the Romanian peony on Saturday, May 16, at 19:00, in Matache Square in Bucharest, with free public access.

'The energy of the Madrigal brand will be present in every Romanian home through this beauty of May, the peony. We are in the middle of a fascinating process, seeking to combine the genes of the most beautiful flower Romania will enjoy - one that will proudly bear the Madrigal name,' said Emil Pantelimon, the choir's manager.

The peony, a plant rich in symbolism for Romanians and deeply rooted in the country's natural landscape, blooms in mid-May and is celebrated each year during this period. May 15 has been designated International Peony Day, according to information from the Faculty of Horticulture at USAMV Bucharest.

In Romanian folklore, the peony is associated with beauty, vitality, purity and good health, appearing in poetry, stories, paintings and traditional clothing motifs. Recognizing its cultural significance, Professor Florin Toma of the Faculty of Horticulture proposed in 2013 that the peony be officially declared Romania's national flower. The initiative gained further support in 2015 from Andreea Tanasescu and Cristina Turnagiu Dragna, founders of the 'La blouse roumaine' online community. The peony was formally proclaimed Romania's national flower on October 26, 2022. AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Daniel Popescu; EN - writing by: Simona Klodnischi)
