Romania's energy production down 2.3% in Q1; imports down 4.1% and exports up 13.9%

Romania's energy production fell by 2.3% in the first three months of this year compared with the same period in 2025, while final electricity consumption decreased by 2.2%, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INS) data published on Friday.

According to official statistics, between 1 January and 31 March 2026, primary energy resources fell by 3.2%, while electricity resources rose by 2.6% compared with the first quarter of the previous year.

At the same time, total primary energy resources amounted to 7.909 million tonnes of oil equivalent (toe), down by 258,500 toe year on year. Domestic production totalled 4.116 million toe (down 2.3%), while imports stood at 3.793 million toe (down 4.1%).

The INS data show that in the period under review, electricity resources stood at 18.213 billion kWh, increasing by 463.8 million kWh (+2.6%).

Output from thermal power plants stood at 5.053 billion kWh, declining by 156.8 million kWh (-3%), while hydroelectric production amounted to 3.772 billion kWh, up 1.045 billion kWh (+38.3%) and nuclear power plant output reached 2.864 billion kWh (-3%).

According to the quoted source, in the first quarter (Q1) wind power generation rose by 290.9 million kWh (+18%) to 1.904 billion kWh, while solar energy produced in photovoltaic installations during the same period totalled 774.1 million kWh, increasing by 74.6 million kWh (+10.7%).

Overall, final electricity consumption stood at 12.822 billion kWh (-2.2% compared with Q1 2025), electricity consumption in the economy fell by 0.1%, public lighting rose by 5.3% and household consumption decreased by 9.2%.

Electricity exports totalled 3.660 billion kWh, increasing by 445.3 million kWh (+13.9%).

At the same time, own technological consumption in networks and substations amounted to 1.731 billion kWh, increasing by 311.5 million kWh (+21.9%). AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Daniel Badea; EN - writing by: Rodica State)
