MApN: Russian drone attack in Ukraine near Romanian border; fragments fall in Galati city
Russian forces resumed the drone attacks overnight from Friday to Saturday on targets in Ukraine, near the river border with Romania, two Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft of the British Air Force were scrambled, with authorisation to engage the drones and in the Bariera Traian area of the city of Galati drone fragments were reported to have fallen, damaging an outbuilding, as well as an electricity pole, with no casualties recorded, the Ministry of National Defence (MApN) informed.
According to the MApN press release, on the morning of Saturday, 25 April, Russian forces resumed the drone attacks on civilian and infrastructure targets in Ukraine, near the river border with Romania, in Tulcea county. The MApN radars detected drones operating close to Romanian airspace. Two Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft of the British Air Force, part of the Enhanced Air Policing combat service, took off at 02:00 from the 86th Air Base 'Lieutenant Aviator Gheorghe Mociorni?' (86th Air Base in Fetesti).
The National Military Command Centre notified the Inspectorate General for Emergency Situations (IGSU) on the introduction of population alert measures in the localities of Grindu and Isaccea, Tulcea county, with a RO-ALERT message sent at 02:14.
'The Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft had radar contact with a target located 1.5 kilometres from Reni, above Ukrainian territory. The pilots were authorised to engage the drones. Ground-based MApN radars maintained contact with a group of targets up to the area of Reni, Ukraine, where multiple explosions were reported,' the quoted source mentioned.
At the same time, residents of the city of Galati reported, via the 112 emergency service, at 02:31, the fall of an object in the Bariera Traian area.
'Specialised teams from the IGSU and other structures within the MAI [Ministry of Internal Affairs] are at the scene conducting investigations. No casualties have been reported. Initial assessments indicate that an outbuilding within a household, as well as an electricity pole, were affected, with no significant damage. Drone fragments have been identified in several locations in the respective area, which is secured by the Romanian Police and MApN military personnel,' the MApN release said.
Moreover, 'the Ministry of National Defence strongly condemns the irresponsible actions of the Russian Federation and underscores that they represent a new challenge to regional security and stability in the Black Sea area.'
'Such incidents demonstrate the Russian Federation's disregard for international law and endanger not only the safety of Romanian citizens, but also NATO's collective security. Romania remains firmly committed to fulfilling its obligations as a member state of the Alliance and will continue to work closely with partners and allies to monitor and defend national airspace,' the release added.
