European Chief Prosecutor, awarded Leipzig Robert Blum Prize, to donate prize money to Ukraine
European Chief Prosecutor Laura Codruta Kovesi was awarded the Leipzig Robert Blum Prize for Democracy, and she announced that the prize money will be donated to Ukraine.
The prize honours Ms Kovesi's advocacy for judicial independence, combating financial crime, and her decisive action in building European rule-of-law institutions, the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) announced on its social media accounts.
The ceremony, which took place in the Old Town Hall of Leipzig, was held in the presence of Frans Timmermans, former Vice-President of the European Commission, who gave the laudatory speech, and Dr Stefanie Hubig, Federal Minister of Justice of Germany.
Laura Codruta Kovesi said she was honoured to receive the distinction bearing the name of Robert Blum, 'a symbol of civic courage and responsibility,' and announced that the prize money would be donated to Ukraine, 'as a sign of solidarity with those who are defending Europe's democratic values today.'
'It is an honour to receive the Leipzig Robert Blum Prize for Democracy, which I accept with a strong sense of responsibility and a simple truth in mind: democracy cannot be taken for granted. Today, it is under open attack also in the European Union. The key question is: what do we do about it? We have a collective, but also individual responsibility in this. Democracy is weakened when justice is perceived as yielding to power rather than serving citizens. For me, the rule of law is the strongest guarantee of security and trust, because it makes justice tangible and equality before the law effective. And the best defence of rule of law is determination in applying the law and integrity,' said the European Chief Prosecutor.
The Leipzig Robert Blum Prize for Democracy commemorates the democratic legacy of Robert Blum, a leading figure in the March Revolution of 1848/49. It recognises commitment to democracy, freedom of expression, enlightenment, non-violent change, and understanding within Germany, Europe, and the world.
