MApN: Fresh Russian strike on Ukrainian Danube ports; drone briefly breaches national airspace
Four fighter aircraft were scrambled on Thursday after radars of the Ministry of National Defence (MApN) detected two drones near the border with Ukraine, one of which briefly entered Romania's national airspace.
'MApN radars detected on Thursday the presence of a drone near the state border with Ukraine, following a new aerial attack launched by the Russian Federation against Ukrainian Danube ports. At around 16:25, two F-16 aircraft stationed at Fetesti Air Base were scrambled in accordance with air policing procedures. The population in the northern part of Tulcea County received a RO-ALERT message issued by the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, following notification from the Air Force General Staff,' the Ministry said in a press release sent to AGERPRES.
According to the Ministry, the unmanned aerial vehicle did not enter Romanian airspace, and the alert measures were lifted around 17:30.
Subsequently, at 18:00, two Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft - one belonging to the German Air Force and one to the Spanish Air Force - were scrambled from the 57th Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base after another unmanned aerial vehicle was observed heading towards national airspace. The Ministry added that the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations issued a second RO-ALERT message to residents in north-eastern Tulcea County.
'The unmanned aircraft briefly entered national airspace, leaving it at around 18:30, north of Sulina,' MApN said. AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Mihai Stoica; EN - writing by: Simona Iacob)
