Romanian Academy and Academy of Sciences of Moldova launch appeal for Romanian Academy branch in Chisinau

Image

The Romanian Academy and the Academy of Sciences of Moldova on Monday launched an appeal to the Romanian Parliament regarding the possibility of creating a branch of the Romanian Academy in Chisinau, by adopting the draft law amending and supplementing Law no. 752/2001 on the organisation and functioning of the Romanian Academy, registered with the Senate under no. L72/2026.

'The Romanian Academy and the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, supreme forums for the recognition of Romanian intellectual values, address this Appeal to you regarding the amendment of the 2001 Law of the Romanian Academy, with a view to the optimal functioning of the institution founded in Bucharest in 1866, including the possibility of creating a branch of the Romanian Academy in Chisinau. Our approach is part of a natural and consistent process of institutional rapprochement between the two sister academies, a process reaffirmed through the Joint Declaration of 30 December 2025 and the Joint Appeal of 15 January 2026, adopted on National Culture Day,' the document signed by the presidents of the two institutions, acad. Ioan-Aurel Pop and acad. Ion Tighineanu, points out.

The two institutions underline that spiritual, cultural and scientific reunification represents the durable foundation of any future political unity.

'In the current context, the Romanian Academy has branches only in Iasi, Cluj-Napoca and Timisoara. The draft law under debate in the Romanian Senate creates the necessary legal framework for this initiative. We mention that the Hungarian Academy of Sciences has had a branch in Cluj-Napoca since 2007. It is Hungary's only branch abroad and it functions very well,' the two institutions say.

The signatories consider that 'the moment is a historic one', recalling that the Romanian Academy, founded in 1866, has from the outset had the vocation of Romanian unity, with three personalities from Bessarabia among its founding members.

'Cultural unified Romania preceded political Romania. Today, in the context of the European path of the Republic of Moldova, we are called upon to once again strengthen, through institutions and concrete projects, the cultural and scientific unity of the Romanian space. The creation of the Romanian Academy branch in Chisinau aims at: accelerating the consolidation of the community of scholars and cultural figures across the entire Romanian space; relaunching and systematising inter-academic exchanges, a practice established in the international academic world; jointly organising summer schools, conferences and large-scale projects with the participation of internationally renowned scientific personalities; supporting the attraction of talented young people towards research and intellectual creation; strengthening the presence of the Romanian space in international bodies (International Science Council, InterAcademy Partnership for Science, Health and Policy, European Federation of Academies of Sciences and Humanities - ALLEA, etc.), which shape strategic visions regarding the development of science at global level,' the document points out.

In the spirit of the idea of 'Union through deeds,' evoked by the President of the Republic of Moldova at the Munich Security Conference, the two academies underline that this branch does not represent a symbolic gesture, but a concrete institutional project aimed at effective cooperation, European compatibility and genuine academic integration.

'On a symbolic level, the creation of the Romanian Academy branch in Chisinau represents a sure step towards the spiritual reunification of the Romanian Academy, reaffirming the organic link between Romanians on both banks of the Prut. It is an institutional link that lays the foundations for a durable unity built through education, science and culture. The adoption of this legislative amendment is not an administrative act, but one of historic responsibility and a signal of confidence in the common future of Romanians within the European Union. We therefore ask you to support and adopt, as soon as possible, the necessary amendments to the Law of the Romanian Academy in order to allow the creation of the Chisinau branch. The Romanian Academy remains, 160 years after its establishment, the most important institution of science, culture and intellectual creation of the entire Romanian people, of all Romanians wherever they may be. It is therefore natural that scholars and creators from the Republic of Moldova should be part of the entire edifice of intellectual recognition and research that is the Romanian Academy,' the appeal also reads.
