Almost 30 vehicles stuck in snow, over 170 fallen trees after heavy snowfall

The authorities intervened nationwide to free around 30 vehicles stuck in snow and to remove more than 170 trees that had fallen after heavy snowfall, Department for Emergency Situations (DSU) Spokesman Bogdan Toma informed on Wednesday morning.

According to him, no injuries were recorded and there were no medical cases that intervention crews were unable to reach, including in situations where ambulances encountered isolated difficulties due to snow-covered roads.

'At national level, the effects of hydro-meteorological phenomena were recorded in 67 localities across 21 counties, including the municipality of Bucharest. Interventions were aimed, among other things, at removing 176 fallen trees and six electricity poles, removing construction elements from ten buildings, managing situations in which 67 cars were damaged and freeing 29 vehicles stuck in snow. It is encouraging that, despite the severe weather conditions, characterised by strong blizzard, significant snow cover and temporary blockages on communication routes, no injuries were recorded and there were no vehicles trapped that could not be reached,' Bogdan Toma said.

The Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (ISU) announced on Wednesday that road traffic is halted on one carriageway of the A0 motorway in the locality of Cornetu, Ilfov, due to a skidded vehicle, on the A1 motorway on the Pitesti - Bucharest carriageway, on the A7 motorway in its entirety, on four national roads and on two county roads due to snow deposited on the carriageway and strong blizzard conditions.

At the same time, traffic is restricted for vehicles weighing more than 7.5 tonnes on two motorways, the A2 between km 10 and 105 on the Bucharest - Constanta carriageway and between km 144 and 10 on the Constanta - Bucharest carriageway and the A3 in its entirety, as well as on three national roads, due to the layer of snow deposited on the carriageway.

Traffic is also restricted for vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tonnes on two national roads.

Regarding air traffic, 13 flights were affected, eight cancelled and five redirected to other airports, and two runways were closed at Henri Coanda International Airport in Otopeni.

As for maritime traffic, operations are suspended in all ports in Constanta and in Tulcea County manoeuvres are suspended in the Sulina Branch area.

Transit of lorries across the Ruse - Giurgiu Bridge border crossing point is also suspended.

In terms of electricity supply, during the reference interval outages were recorded in 21 localities across five counties, Braila, Buzau, Constanta, Prahova and Vrancea, affecting approximately 18,437 end consumers. AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Mihai Stoica; EN - writing by: Adina Panaitescu)
