Nemeth Zsolt: We are glad that democracy won in Romania; we are open to cooperation

Image

Head of the Hungarian Parliament's foreign affairs committee Nemeth Zsolt stated on Wednesday, on the first day of the 'Tusvanyos' Summer University in Baile Tusnad, that he is glad democracy won in Romania, and that Budapest is open to cooperating with Bucharest.

Nemeth Zsolt said that, after the very long electoral year, Romania is a 'very complicated' country, in which the opinion of the Hungarian minority must also be listened to, while also mentioning in the context the meeting that will take place on Wednesday evening, between the prime minister of Romania, Ilie Bolojan, and that of Hungary, Viktor Orban.

'A very long electoral year has ended in Romania and Romania is a very complicated country and it is very important that the opinion of the Hungarian minority in this complicated country is also listened to. All political factors must listen, including the Government in Budapest must take into account the opinion of the Hungarian community. We are glad that democracy won in Romania, we congratulate the political powers that are at the helm of this country. We are open to cooperating with Romania. We believe that there is a way to develop cooperation between the two countries and this evening there will be discussions between Mr. Bolojan and Mr. Orban and I believe that those discussions will open the way for cooperation between the two countries even wider,' stated Nemeth Zsolt, at the opening of the Summer University in Baile Tusnad.

He congratulated the Hungarians in Romania for the results obtained in the elections in Romania and urged them to maintain this 'wise attitude'.

'You have managed to consolidate your unity, you have achieved a result of 6.5 percent. (...) Never forget that national politics is like a triangle, if you will: Hungary, the neighbouring countries and the minorities in those countries, represented by their legitimate organizations, are in the three corners of this triangle and there must be a very good relationship between the three,' said the head of the Foreign Policy Committee of the Hungarian Parliament.

The 'Tusvanyos' Summer University in Baile Tusnad, now in its 34th edition, runs until Sunday, with Hungarian PM Viktor Orban set to deliver his traditional speech on Saturday.

This year's motto of the event is 'You can count on us!' and, according to the organizers, it sends a message of encouragement in an increasingly uncertain geopolitical and economic context.

The debates will be attended by numerous members of the Hungarian Government, including ministers and secretaries of state, as well as UDMR (Democratic Union of Hungarians of Romania) representatives in the Romanian Government, such as deputy prime minister Tanczos Barna or minister of culture Demeter András.

Participants will include UDMR leader Kelemen Hunor, UDMR MEPs or MPs, as well as mayors and presidents of County Councils.

On stage there will also be László Tokés, president of the Hungarian National Council of Transylvania, as well as Zsolt Németh, who is one of the founders of the summer university.

In addition to the political debates, numerous related events take place at the Summer University, and concerts by well-known Hungarian bands from Hungary or Romania are scheduled every evening.

The event is organized by the Hungarian Youth Council of Romania and the Pro Minority Foundation of Hungary. AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Gina Stefan; EN - writing by: Cristina Zaharia)
