National Anthem Day/President Dan: Romania contributes significantly to European and Euro-Atlantic security
Romania, which is on the first defence line of the Eastern Flank of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), contributes 'significantly' to the European and Euro-Atlantic security, president Nicusor Dan underscored in a messaged on the National Anthem Day.
'We are living troubled times, with many challenges, conflicts, and instability, with a brutal war on our border,' the head of state said.
He mentioned that, in this context, the line 'Now or never' takes on special meaning. 'It is a call for solidarity, action, and responsibility. We need cohesion around national values, a strategic vision to take our country to the place it deserves: a trustworthy ally, an active state, respected in Europe and the world,' the president added.
According to him, the anthem 'brings to mind with all the force that unity, dignity, responsibility and freedom are the cardinal values which modern Romania was built on.'
'Desteapta-te, romane!' ('Awaken Thee, Romanian!') is the 'voice of a nation that managed to keep its unity in the most difficult moments of its history,' Nicusor Dan highlighted.
The head of state mentioned that Romania's anthem represents 'one of the most powerful national symbols, whose history is connected to crucial moments in our development as a modern society.'
He added that 'Desteapta-te, romane!' become 'a call synonymous with the freedom and courage of a nation, which, after all the dark and disastrous periods of its past, found the force to rise up and rebuild itself.'
'Today, we bring to mind with respect and gratitude those who put Romania's independence and sovereignty above their own lives. The heroes who, through their sacrifice, made it possible for us to live in a democratic country, part of a free world. First used during the 1848 revolution, the lyrics written by Andrei Muresan and the music by Anton Pann have inspired generations, becoming, in December 1989, a symbol of Romania's liberation from communism,' the president pointed out.
The president stated that, since then, 'the national anthem defined the essence of the democratic ideals and Euro-Atlantic values of our country, consecrating Romanians' determination to oppose, over the last three and a half decades, any abuses that would jeopardize the rule of law and the freedoms they have won.'
