Yiddish Theatre Festival opens with 'Song of Songs'; Israeli ambassador: It is related to our history, traditions
The 10th edition of the Yiddish Theatre Festival TES FEST kicked off on Wednesday evening at the State Jewish Theatre with the premiere of the show 'Song of Songs,' written by King Solomon, directed by Alexander Hausvater.
The ambassador of the State of Israel to Romania, Lior Ben Dor, attended the event.
'I am very glad to be here, it is a very big honour for me. We are going to enjoy today the 'Song of Songs,' which is related to us, to our history and our traditions. (...) We know that Yiddish is a very important language for the history of our people and we know that many Romanians who emigrated to Israel contributed a lot to the establishment and building of the State of Israel, and I believe that they also contributed to the establishment of the theatre in Israel and, in general, to the building of the art community there,' said Lior Ben Dor, PhD, before the show.
Director Alexander Hausvater specified earlier in the week that the show is 'totally different' from everything that he did before.
'The show in itself I believe that it's totally different from everything that I did before, from everything that was ever done in this theatre. (...) The show is made of different stories, different images, which show that this Solomon kept the feather pen in his right hand while writing the 'Song of Songs', while writing this extraordinary poems, which feather pen he sometimes had to abandon to take the sword, to fight against the enemies of his people. And what I want to say with this is that the war is absolutely related to everything that happens, a war, in my case, that started and never ended, and that consumes me,' explained Hausvater.
The 'Song of Songs' is played in Yiddish accompanied by subtitles in both Romanian and English.
The 'Song of Songs' ('Shir Hashirim') is an ode to love, which is believed to be the best Jewish literary work, its meaning being 'The Best Song', 'The Most Beautiful Song' or, according to the tradition 'The Most Sacred Song.'
The 10th edition of the Yiddish Theatre Festival TES FEST is taking place in Bucharest until May 20, Avi Hoffman, one of the most appreciated Yiddish actors, directors and singers in the world, being among the guests.
This year's edition overlaps with the 185th anniversary of the birth of the founder of the Professional Jewish Theatre, Abraham Goldfaden.
