Mountain rescuers recover four Ukrainian citizens from Maramuresului Mountains

Four Ukrainian citizens who crossed the border into Romania through the Maramuresului Mountains and who asked for help from mountain rescuers were recovered from the mountain on the night between Sunday and Monday and handed over to the authorities, informs the head of the Maramures County Mountain Rescue Public Service (SPJ), Dan Benga.

'This was a search and rescue operation that lasted all night and that got a little complicated sometime after midnight. Last night, the three Ukrainian citizens, aged 21, 26 and 40, were found after approximately 6 and a half hours. One of them had a fever, probably due to physical exhaustion, and another Ukrainian had a two-day-old wound, infected and swollen on his right upper limb. The two were given first aid and all three were prepared for extraction from the mountain. Upon reaching the base of the mountain, one of the Ukrainians was transported to the medical unit for investigation and treatment, and the other two were taken over by the relevant authorities in order to carry out the procedures imposed in such cases,' said Dan Benga.

While the rescue team was evaluating the intervention together with the border police, the crews received another call to recover a Ukrainian citizen.

'While the mountain rescuers, together with their colleagues from the Valea Viseului Border Police, were summarizing the rescue operation, last night another request for emergency help was received through INTERPOL from a Ukrainian citizen in an EU member state regarding another 34-year-old Ukrainian citizen who was in the Maramuresului Mountains, who according to the former had a fractured lower limb and could no longer move, needing specialized help (...). After searches that lasted over five hours, the 34-year-old Ukrainian was found. He had no medical problems, as he did not follow the rescuers' instructions to remain in the place from which he transmitted the coordinates (...). He was offered hot tea and food, was checked, prepared and extracted from the mountain, and in the early hours of the morning, given that he did not have any medical problems, he was taken over by the relevant authorities to carry out the required legal procedures,' Dan Benga specified.

The two operations to extract Ukrainian citizens from the mountain were carried out with the support of border police from the Valea Viseului and Poienile de sub Munte sectors, localities bordering Ukraine. AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Leontin Cupar, EN - writing by: Cristina Zaharia)
