European Parliament greenlights Lucian Romascanu's nomination as member of European Court of Auditors

The European Parliament, convened in a plenary session in Strasbourg, on Tuesday, greenlighted the nomination of Lucian Romascanu, nominated by the Romanian Government, as a member of the European Court of Auditors (ECA).
The MEPs endorsed his appointment with 437 votes in favour, 128 against and 92 abstentions. The current mandate of the Romanian member of the European Court of Auditors, Viorel Stefan, will expire on June 30, 2025.
The final decision will be made by the EU member states within the Council.
The European Court of Auditors (ECA) is in charge with controlling the European Union finance. As the external auditor of the European Union, it contributes to improving the financial management of the EU and acts as the independent guardian of the financial interests of EU citizens.
ECA members must either be or have been part of the national external financial control institutions in their country or have specific qualifications for this position and must demonstrate full guarantees of independence. They are appointed by the Council, by qualified majority, upon the recommendation of each member state for the respective position, after consultation with the European Parliament.
The mandate of ECA members is six years, with the possibility of extension.
ECA members enjoy the same privileges and immunities as the judges of the Court of Justice of the EU and 'exercise their functions in full independence.' This means they are not allowed to request or accept instructions from any external source, must refrain from any act incompatible with their duties, and may not engage in any other professional activity, whether paid or not.
If a member of the ECA violates these conditions, the Court of Justice can remove them from office.
Lucian Romascanu, whose nomination was previously recommended by the European Parliament's Committee on Budgetary Control (CONT), was minister of Culture and is currently president of the Buzau County Council. He holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Economic Studies in Bucharest and a master's degree (MBA) from the Faculty of Business Administration (ASSEBUS) in Bucharest.
