Fritz: USR will not endorse a government serving as PSD 'smokescreen'
Save Romania Union (USR) President Dominic Fritz said on Monday, after meeting prime minister-designate Eugen Tomac, that there were 'many questions' surrounding some of the individuals proposed for ministerial positions in a possible future cabinet.
'There are at least several names regarding which we obviously have many questions. (...) We shared our doubts with him. (...) We did not propose any technocrats precisely because we believe USR ministers should not be replaced. That is why we did not vote for a no-confidence motion against them,' Fritz said at a press conference held at USR headquarters.
Asked whether President Nicusor Dan intended to nominate another technocratic prime minister should Eugen Tomac fail to secure parliamentary support, Fritz replied in the affirmative.
'That is how I understood the plan. If the Tomac government fails, then the second proposal would also be a technocrat. At least that is how I understood it,' he said.
Fritz stressed that USR would not endorse a government that would serve as 'a smokescreen' allowing the Social Democratic Party (PSD) to continue obstructing reforms needed by Romania.
'We are not afraid of snap elections either. If we cannot solve this equation, then we can return to the people. But, yes, we have to acknowledge that USR, PNL and UDMR, for example, do not currently have a majority in Parliament,' he added.
Fritz said USR and President Nicusor Dan share the same vision for the country and a 'long history of fighting' for the same values.
'I have confidence that, even if in certain situations we may reach different political conclusions, this relationship will endure,' he said.
The USR delegation attending the meeting with prime minister-designate Eugen Tomac also included Environment Minister Diana Buzoianu, Defence Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Radu Miruta, leader of the USR deputies Diana Stoica, leader of the USR senators Sorin Sipos and USR MP Cezar Dragoescu, a member of the party's National Bureau.
