Unemployment rate down to 5.5% in January; youth unemployment still high

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 5.5% in January 2025, down 0.2 percentage points compared to the rate recorded in December 2024, according to data the National Institute of Statistics (INS) published on Tuesday.
The unemployment rate for men was 0.7 percentage points higher than for women, with values of 5.8% for men and 5.1% for women.
The estimated number of unemployed persons (aged 15-74) for January 2025 stood at 450,900, a decrease compared to the previous month (462,700 persons), as well as compared to the same period of the previous year (455,300 persons).
For adults (aged 25-74), the unemployment rate was estimated at 4.2% for January 2025 (4.5% for men and 3.9% for women). The number of unemployed persons aged 25-74 represents 72% of the total number of unemployed persons estimated for January 2025.
According to the INS, attention is still drawn to the high level of 26.3% for the youth unemployment rate (ages 15-24) recorded in the October - December 2024 period. AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Andreea Marinescu; EN - writing by: Adina Panaitescu)
