Romanian College of Physicians' Catalina Poiana: Four million Romanians suffer from obesity

President of the Romanian College of Physicians Catalina Poiana on Tuesday said that the prevalence of obesity in Romania is 22.5%, which means that four million Romanians suffer from obesity.
'In Romania, the prevalence of obesity is about 22.5%, meaning we have 4 million Romanians suffering from obesity. If we look at the most recent World Obesity Atlas, which was released a few hours ago, it shows that the projected proportion of adults living with a high body mass index is dramatically increasing, both for women and men. By 2025, 70% of adults will have a high body mass index and 39% of adults will live with obesity. These same figures for women and men are expected to rise by 2030, which will bring us to over 10 million adults with a high body mass index by 2030. The most important thing is the connection between obesity and body mass index with chronic non-communicable diseases,' said the doctor.
The president of the Romanian College of Physicians attended a conference on Tuesday organised by the 'Carol Davila' University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest and the Medical Association for a Chance at a Healthy Life from Childhood to Old Age, in the context of the International HPV Infection Awareness Day and World Obesity Day.
According to the doctor, premature deaths are caused by major chronic diseases such as ischemic heart disease, stroke and cancers, diseases that can be attributed to a high body mass index.
Catalina Poiana said that 'there is still not enough political involvement' for the implementation of national obesity prevention programmes and that there is still insufficient investment in obesity research.
'We have to acknowledge it - there is still not enough political involvement, interest and action to carry out national programmes. We still have work to do in educating healthcare professionals. There is still a strong barrier because patients must pay out of pocket for both medication and surgical interventions in extreme obesity. There is still insufficient investment in obesity research and, of course, there are many barriers related to cultural norms, traditions, and the stigma that continues to be attached to people living with this disease,' Poiana concluded.
