CCR president: Honouring Constitution of Romanian people must be manifested through respect and loyalty to country

President of the Constitutional Court of Romania (CCR) Marian Enache sent a message on Sunday on the occasion of Constitution Day, saying that honouring the Fundamental Law "must be expressed through respect and loyalty to the country."

"This year, our Constitution Day coincides with the 101st anniversary of the adoption of the 1923 Constitution - the fundamental act that defined, in a modern European context, the place of the Romanian state and the rights of its citizens. It is an opportunity to reflect both on the evolution of Romania's Fundamental Law, its importance for democracy and the rule of law, and on the challenges we face today," reads the message.

Marian Enache evoked that the fundamental principles of the 1923 Constitution - human rights, the separation of powers in the state, and the protection of individual dignity and liberty - were never fully destroyed, surviving in the national spirit and being restored through the 1991 Constitution.

"Over three decades after the victory of the Romanian Revolution in December 1989 and the adoption of the new Constitution, it is particularly important to respect the achievements of the Romanian people and the country's constitutional history, but also to view the future with responsibility. In the face of contemporary challenges, it is essential to be aware of the existing vulnerabilities, as well as the resilience resources available to us," the CCR president said.

He emphasised that trust in the Constitution, respect for the rule of law, and defense of democratic principles are fundamental elements for consolidating a stable, viable, and fair society.

"Although today we witness forces threatening the fundamental values of democracy, we must remain united and determined to counteract and protect them. The Constitutional Court will continue to defend the Constitution and guarantee that the fundamental rights and freedoms of citizens will be respected. In the face of manipulation and disinformation, we, as a nation, have the duty to promote the truth and reaffirm our belief in the Fundamental Law as an undeniable pillar of unity, progress, and national sovereignty. It is crucial to remind the importance of freedom of expression and the right to accurate information. In a world where manipulation and the proliferation of fake news, as well as the uncontrolled use of artificial intelligence, can influence and distort decision-making, institutions of the rule of law become the real guarantee for strengthening the democratic process," the message continues.

The president of the CCR brought to mind that Romanians have the duty to cherish constitutional traditions "in full harmony with European values," ensuring that the country's democratic future is a certainty, despite all challenges.

"Honouring the Constitution of the Romanian people must be manifested through respect and loyalty to the country as a sacred duty of every Romanian toward the traditions and eternal values of Romania," the message from Marian Enache concludes.
