City of Brasov has been awarded organisation of winter edition of European Youth Olympic Festival
The city of Brasov was awarded on Friday the organisation of the 18th edition of the European Youth Olympic Winter Festival (EYOF) in 2027, a decision made at the European Olympic Committees (EOC) General Assembly held at the Palace of Parliament in Bucharest.
Spyros Capralos, president of the EOC, told a press conference on Friday that the validation of the bid is a continuation of the tradition started in 2013 when central city of Brasov also hosted the European Youth Olympic Winter Festival.
"Today, the General Assembly approved Brasov as host city of the 2027 edition of the winter EYOF. It is a continuation of the tradition started in 2013, when Romania and Brasov also hosted the winter EYOF. So we are very happy to have very well prepared organisers for the next competitions. The future of Olympic sport in Europe looks bright, even if today we are going through less peaceful times from a geopolitical point of view," said Capralos.
In his turn, the president of the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee (COSR), Mihai Covaliu, said that Brasov has had the necessary infrastructure since 2013, but this will be improved with the support of the government so that the 2027 edition of the winter EYOF can be held in the best possible conditions.
"In 2013 we organised the winter edition of the European Youth Olympic Festival in Brasov and it was a great success at that time. Now of course we benefit from the related infrastructure for winter sports. It has even improved, and by 2027, with the support of the Romanian Government, we will reach the optimal level to be able to organise this competition in the best conditions, said the EOC president.
On Thursday, the Government approved, by memorandum, the submission of Romania's candidacy to organise the 18th European Youth Olympic Winter Festival in Brasov in 2027.
Romania will organise the European Youth Olympic Festival for the second time after the 2013 winter edition, also held in Brasov. At that time, the competition took place from 17-22 February 2013 in Predeal (cross-country skiing and snowboarding), Cheile Gradistei-Fundata (biathlon), Poiana Brasov (alpine skiing, figure skating and short track), Brasov (hockey) and Rasnov - Valea Carbunarii (ski jumping).AGERPRES(RO - author: Marius Tone, editor: Adrian Dragut; EN - author: Simona Iacob, editor: Maria Voican)
