Romanian Cultural Institute in London celebrates 20 years with photography exhibition, concert

The Romanian Cultural Institute (ICR) in London is celebrating 20 years of promoting Romanian culture in the United Kingdom with a special event featuring the photography exhibition 'PAST FORWARD: 20 Years of Romanian Culture in London' and a concert by Unicorn Frequency, an international ensemble led by Romanian-British violinist Bogdan Vacarescu.

The event will take place on Thursday, starting at 19:00, at the Institute's headquarters at 1 Belgrave Square, London.

'Twenty years, thousands of events, countless artists, projects, encounters and memorable moments. Since November 2006, the Romanian Cultural Institute in London has made a substantial contribution to strengthening the presence of Romanian culture on the British arts scene, building bridges of dialogue between the two countries and facilitating collaborations between artists, cultural institutions and international audiences,' according to a statement sent to AGERPRES on Tuesday.

Over the past two decades, the Institute has welcomed prominent figures from cultural and public life, as well as members of the British and Romanian royal families. Its guests have included King Charles, whose visits marked milestones in the institution's history and highlighted the depth of cultural and historical ties between Romania and the United Kingdom, the statement said.

Through programmes devoted to music, literature, cinema, visual arts, theatre and intellectual debate, ICR London has showcased Romanian creativity, supported emerging generations of artists and laid the foundations for lasting cultural partnerships.

'The British cultural scene - one of the most demanding, but also one of the richest in opportunities - has been among the Romanian Cultural Institute's priorities ever since its London branch opened in 2006. Organising an average of more than 70 events a year, the teams that have overseen the ICR's activities in the United Kingdom over the past 20 years have strengthened cultural dialogue between the two countries, encouraging collaboration across a wide range of fields. From projects highlighting our shared history, such as the one about the Dacians sent to Britain under the Roman Empire to help build Hadrian's Wall, to the unveiling of a statue of Queen Marie in Ashford; from partnerships with the British Council, such as 'Circular Catalysts', which brought together British designers and craftspeople from rural Romania, to a substantial presence at the London Book Fair; from contemporary art exhibitions to the long-running Enescu Concerts series; and from supporting Romanian films at international film festivals to academic lectures, ICR London has promoted Romanian culture not only in the United Kingdom, but also in Ireland and Iceland. Twenty years of initiatives, twenty years of ideas and projects in the service of Romanian culture. Happy 20th anniversary, ICR London!' ICR President Corina Incrosnatu said.

For her part, ICR London Director Aura Woodward described the 20th anniversary as a moment of both reflection and pride.

'Over these two decades, the Institute has welcomed everyone from King Charles and Nobel laureates to internationally acclaimed artists, all contributing to a shared effort to promote our culture. Today, ICR London is one of the most vibrant cultural venues in the British capital, a testament to the power of cultural diplomacy, which brings people together through art and shared values, builds trust and leaves a lasting legacy beyond changing political circumstances,' Aura Woodward said.

The anniversary exhibition 'PAST FORWARD: 20 Years of Romanian Culture in London' offers a visual retrospective of the Romanian Cultural Institute in London's two decades of activity, bringing together an extensive selection of photographs documenting the events, personalities, performances, exhibitions and encounters that have shaped the institution's history.

The images capture both landmark moments in institutional partnerships and artistic encounters and experiences that have helped bring Romanian culture closer to British audiences.

An important part of the exhibition is devoted to the photographers who have documented the Institute's activities over the years. The exhibition pays tribute to their contributions, with special recognition given to Cristian Alexa, Inno Brezeanu, Alexandru Coman and Razvan Danaila, whose photographs have preserved a visual record of numerous events and personalities.

The exhibition will remain open until December 5, Monday to Friday, from 10:00 to 16:00.

The anniversary evening will continue with a concert by Unicorn Frequency, an international ensemble led by Romanian-British violinist Bogdan Vacarescu. Bringing together five musicians with diverse backgrounds and artistic influences, the group offers a lively musical journey in which Romanian and Balkan folk traditions blend with Greek and Italian sounds and other influences drawn from Europe's musical heritage.

Joining Bogdan Vacarescu on violin will be Elena Hadjiafxendi on vocals, Peter Michaels on guitar, Paul Moylan on double bass and Ohad Lustigman on percussion and drums. The concert promises an engaging, participatory musical experience in which the diversity of European traditions finds expression in a shared artistic language that transcends geographical and cultural boundaries.
