The second edition of the New European Bauhaus Festival (NBE), organized by the European Commission, will take place in Brussels, Belgium, between April 9 and 13, in the Parc du Cinquatenaire and at the Museum of Art & History. The festival will include the awarding ceremony of the fourth edition of the New Bauhaus European Awards, where a Romanian project is nominated in component A, and 20 winners will receive a total of 390,000 euros. In addition to the event in Brussels, the festival will take place throughout Europe and not only, as there will be also events streamed online as "Satellite Events."

The European Commission, in collaboration with the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, is organizing the second edition of the New European Bauhaus Festival, an initiative that links the European Green Deal to our daily lives and living spaces. Designed around the pillars of "Forum", "Fair" and "Festival", the event embarks the public on a five-day journey of interactive sessions, workshops, demonstrations and artistic performances, hosting high-level international speakers and special guests, according to a statement of the organizers.

The official opening will take place on April 9 in the presence of the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commissioners, Iliana Ivanova and Elisa Ferreira, the Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo and the Belgian Secretary of State for Economic Recovery and Strategic Investments within the Ministry of Economy and Employment, Thomas Dermine, in charge with the science policy, as well as in the presence of the head of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), Hans-Joachim Schellnhuber.

The festival represents an important bridge between the New European Bauhaus movement, high-level representatives of the EU, decision-makers, leaders in the art, architecture, design, sustainability, innovation industry and the general public, according to the press release issued by the organizers.

The "Forum" will include keynote addresses, panel discussions and debates, exploring the various facets of NBE values. High-level personalities will hold discussions on various topics, from science and technology to culture and education, as well as regional development and international perspectives. Architects, artists, scientists and climate activists will also contribute to the discourse, offering perspectives on science, technology, culture, education and global development. Each session will also be streamed and available online worldwide, according to the same press release.

The "Fair" invites the public to explore more than 70 exhibitions of innovators, with NBE-style projects that address the urgent need for a more sustainable and equitable future, with innovative solutions. "Visitors can engage in immersive exhibitions and interactive experiences to discover state-of-the-art models that address social and environmental needs," the release states.

The "Festival" will be the place where culture, art and entertainment meet to celebrate creativity, innovation and diversity. "The public can anticipate dance, theatre and music performances from artists from around the world, such as Sibil-la and Besac Arthur - as well as scientific experiments or recycling workshops, according to the organizers.

This year's edition will host the awarding ceremony of the fourth edition of the European New Bauhaus Festival 2024. "The NBE awards will be awarded in four categories: Reconnecting with nature; Regaining the sense of belonging; Prioritizing places and people who have the greater need; Shaping a circular industrial ecosystem and supporting life-cycle thinking. 50 finalists compete in the final stage of the competition, both candidates with completed projects and young people with innovative ideas, all demonstrating creativity, talent and the commitment of people from all over Europe and beyond to build a more sustainable, inclusive and beautiful world," according to the abovementioned press release.

Also, according to the organizers, the NBE accepts, for the first time, projects from Ukraine, in addition to EU member states and from the Western Balkans. A "special recognition of Ukraine's reconstruction and recovery effort" will also be given to projects and ideas that align with NBE values and actively contribute to Ukraine's reconstruction, in the spirit of recognizing and supporting Ukraine's effort and commitment to rebuild better.

"The NBE 2024 awards also focus on those regions that face more intense socio-economic problems, as well as those that are most challenged by the adaptation to the carbon neutrality process, awarding a quarter of the awards to projects and ideas that bring a positive transformation to those places," reads the same press release. This year's nominees include "Padurea-Parc Faget; The green lung of Cluj" [The Parc Faget Forest] (Romania), which aims to co-design and pilot an integrated management and multiple operation plan for Padurea-Parc Faget.

During the awards ceremony, 20 of the 50 finalists will be rewarded with a total of 390,000 euros.

"Since 2021, the NBE Awards have already involved over 5,000 candidates, and the 2024 edition is once again proof of this ever-growing community," according to the organizers.

As part of the experience, the public is invited to participate in the voting process until March 27 at 18:00 CET.

The New European Bauhaus (NBE) is a European movement that invites everyone to imagine and build together a better future: beautiful, sustainable and inclusive places, products and ways of life. Launched by the European Commission in 2021, this interdisciplinary initiative is closely linked to the European Green Deal and offers a platform for experimentation, connection and positive change on the ground through bottom-up projects, according to the organizers.

"Focusing primarily, but not exclusively, on transforming our living spaces, the New European Bauhaus bridges the worlds of science and technology, art and culture to create innovative solutions that are environmentally friendly and accessible to everyone. Through teamwork and community involvement, it empowers local and regional communities, industries and creative minds to improve our quality of life," the press release said.
