Mintia combined-cycle power plant set to start production towards year-end (minister)
Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja said on Thursday in Mintia - Hunedoara County that the project for the new local combined-cycle power plant developed by Mass is at more than 75% of completion for the first cycle and that the first amounts of electricity could be produced here towards the end of the year.
'There are high chances that, at the end of this year, the first part of this project is put into operation, which means somewhere around 570 MW; in yet another month there will be one more turbine working, so we will exceed one thousand MW, after which, somewhere around mid-2026, the entire installed capacity will be available,' said the Energy minister.
Sebastian Burduja met in Mintia with representatives of company Mass Global Energy Rom, which is building a new gas-fired power plant, and visited the construction site opened at the location of the former Mintia thermal power plant.
'I want all Romanians to know that what has happened here so far is a marvel of technology, as records are being set successively, it is the largest gas-fired power plant in Europe -1,734 MW bundled in one place. Just think that the turbines, generators, transformers are of record size, and the challenges of transporting them were approached with world-first solutions - practically the Siemens turbines were dismantled piece by piece and reassembled on site, under conditions of maximum difficulty,' Burduja said.
He also pointed out that the new thermal power plant is a facility of national importance, as the EUR 1.4 billion investment is 'probably' the most important energy project in Romania in the last 20 years and 'for Romanians it comes with the chance of lower bills, of more secure energy, with the chance to capitalize on the Black Sea gas, here in Romania, for producing electricity.'
Regarding the gas supply project for the Mintia thermal power plant, the minister mentioned that the management of national gas transmission system operator Transgaz has assured that the mainline could be ready in October, just in time with the commissioning of the first turbine.
