Large necropolis housing about 100 graves discovered in Buzau County
Around 100 graves containing artifacts from the 15th-17th centuries have been discovered by archaeologists in one of the largest necropolises brought to light in recent years in Buzau County.
On an area of approximately 9,000 square metres, archaeologists of the Buzau County Museum discovered a necropolis of about 100 graves. The human remains were found on a piece of a privately-owned plot of land in the small town of Sahateni in continuation of previous diggings that unearthed ceramic items belonging to the Santana de Mures culture.
"A fairly important discovery is being made at the moment due to the number of archaeological complexes identified. It is about a mediaeval necropolis circa 17th-17th centuries, that is somewhere from the end of 1400 until around 1600, which partially overlaps a Santana de Mures-type settlement, so the 5th century AD. Research is ongoing, but so far several dozen graves have been discovered, researched and recovered, and in the next stage they will move on to the research of dozens more graves that have been identified in the field. With certainty, taking into account the arrangement and the large number of graves, we can talk about a cemetery, but currently it is not possible to specify the total area of this cemetery, or the total number of archaeological funeral complexes s that make it up," Director of the Buzau County Museum Daniel Costache told AGERPRES.
According to researchers, it is about one of the largest necropolises discovered at this moment in Buzau County.
"There may be the possibility of identifying newer or older graves. It is about a necropolis that extended quite a long time. Any such discovery also consists of artifacts of archaeological interest and here we are talking about ornaments attached to clothes, fragments of ceramic containers. It is one of the largest mediaeval necropolises in Buzau County at the moment," said Costache.
The number of discovered graves could increase, experts believe, considering the large area on which the necropolis seems to spread, and archaeological research in the area could take a few more months.
