Greening action on Danube banks to mark Danube Day
The Teleorman Environmental Protection Agency (APM) announced in a press release that together with the Zimnicea City Hall it will organise a greening action on the banks of the Danube on Wednesday to mark Danube Day.
Volunteers are expected to come to this greening action, together with representatives of the two institutions.
"APM Teleorman organises together with Zimnicea City Hall a greening action on the Danube river bank, on the access road to the port, on June 28. Danube Day is celebrated every year on June 29, when the citizens of the Danube countries are involved in multiple independent or joint activities, carried out locally, regionally and nationally, to bring to the public's attention the importance of protecting the Danube River and the rivers in its basin," reads the APM Teleorman press release.
This year the Danube Day is celebrated under the theme "Preserve the Blue Danube," a theme that aims to protect water resources.
"Preserve the Blue Danube is about the active involvement and contribution of each of us in protecting the water resources that lead to the economic and social development of the Danube region. Each of us must act in the direction of preservation and pollution prevention. The Danube is the second longest river in Europe, with a total length of 2,850 km. (...) Along 1,075 km, or about one third of its total length, the Danube flows through Romania, between Bazias, where it enters the country, and Sulina, where it flows into the Black Sea. The Danube flows into the Black Sea through the three main arms of the Delta: Chilia, Sulina and Sfantu Gheorghe. In Romania, the Danube crosses the following localities: Moldova Noua, Orsova, Drobeta-Turnu Severin, Calafat, Corabia, Turnu Magurele, Zimnicea, Oltenita, Calarasi, Fetesti, Cernavoda, Harsova, Braila, Galati, Patlageanca, Tulcea, Sulina," says APM Teleorman.
The Danube River runs on the territory of Teleorman County at the southern limit on a length of 119 kilometers, and within the county there are two ports on the Danube: Turnu Magurele and Zimnicea.
