Bucharest, Jan 14 /Agerpres/ - The Minister of National Defense, Angel Tilvar, had a meeting on Tuesday with James O'Brien, the assistant for European and Eurasian Affairs of the U.S. Secretary of State, during which he highlighted the 'crucial' role of the Black Sea region in ensuring European and transatlantic security, in the context of the continuation of the Russian Federation's war of aggression in Ukraine.

According to the Ministry of National Defense (MApN), topics of strategic interest for both parties were discussed, with an emphasis on the consolidation of the Romanian-American Strategic Partnership, the support given to Ukraine, as well as the adaptation at the national and allied level to the security challenges generated by the current context in the Black Sea region.

Tilvar emphasized the 'firm' commitment of Romania to the collective security of NATO and expressed appreciation for the substantial contribution of the United States in ensuring the security of the Eastern Flank.

'The active presence of the United States in Romania and in the Black Sea region is vital for European and transatlantic security. Romania remains dedicated to expanding cooperation in the field of security and defense, through continuous investments in modern capabilities that ensure an effective response to current security challenges and future', said the minister.

He also emphasized the importance of the joint Romanian-American military exercises, noting that these contribute 'significantly' to improving interoperability and strengthening defense on NATO's Eastern Flank.

'At the same time, he highlighted the essential role of the American military presence in Romania, considering it a pillar of regional stability and a key-element in ensuring the reaction capacity of the North Atlantic Alliance', the MApN press release reads.
