Head of Allied Command for Transformation, Lanata, in Romania, met with ministers Aurescu and Ciuca
The head of the Allied Command Transformation (ACT), General Andre Lanata, is visiting Romania and met on Tuesday with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bogdan Aurescu, and the Minister of National Defence, Nicolae Ciuca.
The head of the Romanian diplomacy specified during the meeting that our country was the first ally that used the strategic air transport capabilities at NATO's disposal for the transport of the necessary medical equipment and materials and the assistance provided to allies and partner states, informs a press release of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) sent to AGERPRES .
According to the quoted source, the two officials stressed the importance given to NATO-EU cooperation, appreciating that it is all the more useful in order to ensure a coordinated and effective response to traditional and emerging challenges, including in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
During the talks, the need to continue the process of NATO adaptation in line with decisions adopted at allied level was emphasized. The head of the Romanian diplomacy stressed that the efforts to strengthen NATO's position of deterrence and defense must continue, especially with regard to the Eastern Flank, in Romania and in the Black Sea region, through a coherent and unitary approach, as well as through a consistent Allied presence and a consolidated exercise programme.
Aurescu stressed the need to continue providing assistance and support to partners, including those in the Alliance's eastern neighborhood (Georgia, Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova), citing the importance of the ACT's role in this regard.
In his turn, the head of the Allied Command Transformation underlined the importance given to the Black Sea region, including from the perspective of developing the allied plans and concepts and expressed interest in continuing the dialogue with the Romanian side on the subject.
The Minister of Defense spoke, at the meeting with Lanata, about the fact that Romania remains committed to allocating two percent of the Gross Domestic Product for defence, "the year 2020 being the fourth in which these percentages are intended for defense", according to a press release of the Defence Ministry sent to AGERPRES .
Minister Ciuca pointed out that over 20 percent of this money is used for equipment purchases.
The two officials also discussed the priorities of the Romanian Army for the next period, the evolution of the security situation in the Black Sea region and the participation of the Romanian military in NATO missions.
During the meeting between General Andre Lanata and the Chief of the Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Daniel Petrescu, topics such as Romania's initiatives in the region, the establishment of the Southeast Multinational Corps Command and Romania's commitments within NATO were addressed.
