MEP Dan Barna: Building a stable parliamentary majority is practically impossible now

Image

AGERPRES special correspondent Tudor Martalogu reports: Romania is currently facing such a deep political crisis that forming a stable parliamentary majority is practically impossible, MEP Dan Barna (Renew Europe Group) told AGERPRES on Thursday, stressing that early elections are an option for overcoming the current deadlock.

Referring to the talks Prime Minister-designate Luca Niculescu is scheduled to hold with political parties, Barna said that 'it may happen that the Luca Niculescu government secures enough votes for investiture, but it is, in fact, a rather weak and vulnerable government. Some might say that we would gain some time, but I'd say that we would actually lose more time - months or years - before turning back to the voters and seeing what the current wishes of the Romanian people are for moving forward.'

According to the Renew MEP, Romania needs deep structural reforms.

'At this moment, we are on the brink of junk status, pleading with rating agencies to give us a little more time and trying to project an image of credibility. The Bolojan Government, the government Save Romania Union (USR) is also part of, has managed to start reducing the deficit, because this is the major issue we are facing. But more than that is needed. Romania needs a reforming force that derives its legitimacy from the voters' mandate, because otherwise we will only continue to sink, and that is a very serious risk,' Barna explained.

The Romanian MEP does not share the view that early elections would not change the current situation and believes they could provide a way out of Romania's present impasse.

'I do not subscribe to the logic that early elections would be pointless, that citizens don't understand what is happening to them and that they will supposedly vote according to what TV polls suggest. I believe early elections are one option for getting out of the deadlock we are in. Bulgaria held seven rounds of elections, but between those elections, it switched to the euro with seven different governments. In other words, when you undertake a strategic reform, commit to it and take the country in that direction, you can achieve results. What we have is stability that has actually accomplished nothing - a stability that has tied Romania's hands and feet. That is, in fact, the major challenge Mr Luca Niculescu is facing now,' Dan Barna concluded. AGERPRES (RO - editing by: Mariana Ionescu; EN - writing by: Simona Klodnischi)
