Senate's Abrudean: Holocaust against Roma people - a constant warning for the present and future
Senate President Mircea Abrudean underscored on Friday that tolerance and the inclusion of the Roma people are not 'favours,' but constitutional obligations and guarantees of a functioning democracy.
'Today, I attended the commemoration ceremony for the Holocaust against the Roma people organised by the National Agency for the Roma. For decades, the suffering and deaths of thousands of people were silenced, ignored, not taught in schools and left on the margins of collective memory. This prolonged silence was a second injustice done to the victims. Tolerance and inclusion are not favours we grant, they are constitutional obligations and guarantees of a functioning democracy,' Abrudean wrote on his Facebook page.
He added that he wants the memory of the Roma people who perished in the Holocaust not to be 'just a sad page of history.'
'On behalf of the Romanian Senate, a wreath was laid today in memory of those who perished at that time. I want their memory not to be just a sad page of history, but a constant warning for the present and the future,' Mircea Abrudean conveyed.
