'The Gold of the Dacians: Reuniting the Historic Treasure' issue available from Tuesday

Image

Romfilatelia and the Romanian Post will put into circulation on Tuesday the 'The Gold of the Dacians: Reuniting the Historic Treasure' postage stamp issue, made up of a postage stamp, a perforated souvenir sheet, a maximum card, a First Day Cover and a philatelic folder with special product in limited edition.

According to a Romfilatelia release sent to AGERPRES on Monday, the issue features the Golden Helmet of Cotofenesti and two Dacian bracelets, artefacts of exceptional historical value that were stolen in January 2025 from the Drents Museum in Assen, the Netherlands, but recovered by Dutch authorities and returned to the heritage collection of the National History Museum of Romania.

The designs on the postage stamp (with a nominal value of 21 lei) and on the First Day Cover were created by renowned Romanian artist Mircea Cantor and depict images of the Dacian bracelets and a detail from the Cotofenesti helmet. These designs are also featured in the artwork of the special piece included in the philatelic folder, where the colour yellow, combined with the rope motif, suggests an allusion to the gold of the helmet and bracelets, and where the text 'History is a rope' can be identified in places among the modules.

The souvenir sheet of the issue features, on its stamp (with a nominal value of 32 lei), real images of the two bracelets and the Golden Helmet of Cotofenesti, items from the heritage collection of the National History Museum of Romania.

The issue will be available from Tuesday in Romfilatelia store network in Bucharest, Brasov, Cluj-Napoca, Iasi, Timisoara, as well as online.

The Golden Helmet of Cotofenesti is the best-known archaeological object discovered on Romanian territory. Preserved in the collections of the National History Museum of Romania, the gold helmet has a long history that began before 1927, when the item was purchased by Ploiesti merchant Ion Marinescu Moreanu from Alexandru Simion, a resident of Cotofenesti village in Prahova county. Two years later, the exceptional artefact entered the collections of the National Museum of Antiquities after Ion Marinescu Moreanu donated it to the Ministry of Public Instruction and Religious Affairs.

The golden Dacian bracelets represent one of the most spectacular archaeological discoveries of the 21st century, completing a fascinating chapter in the history of the Dacian Kingdom and the political and religious centre of Sarmizegetusa Regia in the 1st century BC.
