FITS 2026/Concert conducted by Cristian Macelaru and drone show, among opening day attractions

A concert by Janoska Ensemble and the Romanian Youth Orchestra, conducted by maestro Cristian Macelaru, together with a multimedia show featuring drones, lights and music, are among the main attractions of the outdoor events on the opening day of the 33rd edition of the Sibiu International Theatre Festival (FITS), organisers announced in a press release.

The festival begins on Friday and will run until 28 June, bringing together 848 indoor, outdoor and online events, with more than 5,000 artists from 83 countries expected to participate. The first day's programme also includes the performance Sex, Money & Hunger, directed by Luk Perceval, one of the leading figures of the European theatre scene.

In Piata Mare, from 22:10, audiences will be able to attend the concert by Janoska Ensemble and the Romanian Youth Orchestra, conducted by Cristian Macelaru. From 23:45, in Piata Teatrului, the traditional multimedia show featuring drones, lights and music, produced by WNU Studio and Evsky Drone Show, will take place.

'This year we are bringing closer to the public artists who perform on the world's greatest stages. It is a great joy to open the first evening of the Festival with a concert under the baton of maestro Cristian Macelaru. It is a gift we offer to the audience with all our SOUL. (...) We have more than 848 events and we welcome audiences with open arms to discover everything we have prepared over the past year,' said FITS President Constantin Chiriac.

Throughout the festival, the stage in Piata Mare will also host other open-air concerts by Bere Gratis, F.Charm & Band, Representative Music of the Ministry of National Defence, Taraful Fratilor Cazanoi, Ioana Stefan and the Cantus Mundi Choirs, Mahala Rai Banda, Voltaj and Horia Brenciu & HB Orchestra.

The theme of this year's FITS edition is 'SOUL,' and the festival's special guests include French actress Fanny Ardant, Swiss director Milo Rau and filmmaker Cristian Mungiu. AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Isabela Paulescu; EN - writing by: Adina Panaitescu)
