Rescue operation for competition participants in Bucegi Mountains; three people fall into ravine

Image

Rescue teams intervened on Saturday to save several people who slipped on ice-covered sections and fell into rugged terrain in the Bucegi Mountains while taking part in the 'Transilvania 100' competition.

According to a press release from the Department for Emergency Situations, authorities were alerted on Saturday to an incident in the area between Malaiesti Cabin and the Tiganesti refuge in the Bucegi Mountains, where several participants in the 'Transilvania 100' competition slipped on ice-covered sections and fell into rugged terrain.

According to initial information, intervention teams managed to recover five people from the route, all conscious and cooperative, showing mild symptoms of hypothermia.

They were transported to Malaiesti Cabin for evaluation and monitoring.

Rescuers also identified three other people in a ravine near the Tiganesti refuge: one conscious person with multiple injuries, for whom a recovery operation is under way; one person suffering from hypothermia; and one conscious person with a fractured pelvis, head trauma and a fracture to the right arm.

Due to adverse weather conditions and reduced visibility in the area, of approximately 100 to 150 metres, the SMURD helicopter requested for the mission is currently unable to intervene by air.

However, the aircraft remains on standby and ready to carry out the mission once weather conditions allow intervention.

The rescue mission is ongoing, with teams from Salvamont Brasov and the Brasov Gendarmerie present at the scene. AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Eusebi Manolache; EN - writing by: Simona Iacob)
