Interim PM Bolojan: If the PSD is in government, the PNL will be in opposition; we want to be Romanians' choice in 2028
The president of the National Liberal Party (PNL), interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, stated on Saturday in Timisoara that the party has two political objectives: in the short term, to find a governing formula in which the PNL assumes its responsibilities, and in the medium term, for 2028, to create an alternative for Romanians who want the country to modernise and develop sustainably.
'If the PSD (Social Democratic Party) is in government, the PNL will be in opposition,' Bolojan said was the message he conveyed to liberal mayors and the leadership of the party's organisation in Timis.
According to Bolojan, the National Liberal Party aims to offer a voting option in 2028 for citizens from diverse communities, without privileges or sinecures, in favour of local autonomy and community development.
'In the short term, the PNL's objective is to find a formula through which Romania can be governed, in which the National Liberal Party does not shy away from the responsibility of governing, as we have demonstrated over these past 10 months. The medium-term objective, for 2028, is to create an alternative in which Romanians who want the country to modernise, who want a country that develops sustainably, where the rules are the same for everyone, a country without privileges or sinecures, where people are respected regardless of which region of the country they come from, a country that places emphasis on local autonomy and the development of communities, such as this strong community in Banat and the municipality of Timisoara, can once again find a party - the National Liberal Party - that they can vote for with confidence in 2028,' Ilie Bolojan said.
At the same time, the PNL leader stated that he had discussed issues related to local public administration with the party's mayors in the county, including government programmes such as 'Anghel Saligny' and the funding available through the National Investment Company.
The liberal leader also held discussions with the Extended County Political Bureau, where he presented the party's future strategy, emphasising that after 10 months in government and because of difficulties caused by the Social Democratic Party (PSD), the PNL would no longer form a coalition with it.
'The second meeting was with the Extended County Political Bureau. I presented the PNL's strategy for the coming period, explaining that, due to the experience we have had during these 10 months in government, due to the Social Democratic Party's avoidance of responsibility, due to the falsehoods it has spread throughout this period, and due to the blockages concerning the reforms that Romania must implement, the National Liberal Party will no longer enter into a coalition with the Social Democratic Party in the coming period. If the PSD is in government, the PNL will be in opposition,' Ilie Bolojan added.
Interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan was on a visit to Timis County on Saturday, where he met with Dominic Fritz, the USR (Save Romania Union) leader and mayor of Timisoara, and attended the graduation ceremony of the class of 2026 at the West University of Timisoara, where he also delivered a speech.
