The United States Ambassador to Bucharest, Darryl Nirenberg, said on Tuesday that Romania has the potential to play a key role in energy security in Europe.

The high US official said that President Trump has signed an executive order highlighting the importance of energy, particularly in the context of international competition, with the President's remarks clearly explaining why energy security and initiatives such as the Vertical Corridor are so important. He also said that Romania has great potential to play a key role in energy security in Europe, and that he was pleased that American companies and know-how are contributing to meeting this challenge. From the Neptun Deep project to the construction of a new reactor at the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant, the development of this energy corridor provides an opportunity for American expertise to deliver the resources needed to support the foundations of developing economies, Darryl Nirenberg said at The Economist Romania Government Roundtable, organised by The Economist Group.

The American diplomat also emphasised the importance of building energy corridors in South-East Europe, as the role these corridors play in Europe's energy security is essential.

According to him, governments and industry leaders are faced with the question of how to build stronger, more stable and more resilient infrastructure in the fields of energy and defence, with energy being a key factor in addressing this challenge. He noted that, as long as north-south connectivity is strengthened, existing credible routes are diversified, and economies in the field of energy security are reinforced, this region will develop more broadly, adding that this corridor runs right through the centre of Romania.

The US Ambassador, who has been in Romania for a month, also highlighted the way he has been received in the country, saying that Romanian people have been very warm to him, and welcomes him with great goodwill. AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Irinela Visan; EN - writing by: Cristina Zaharia)
