Regional water and sewage operator Hydrokov SA announced on Thursday the start of work to supply water to the future spa center in the Covasna resort. The complex will cover about three hectares and include indoor and outdoor pools, a spa area, a swimming pool and a hotel with more than 100 beds.

According to the company, the new pipeline will supply only the wellness center, which is located at a higher altitude. The current network pressure is not sufficient for the facility's needs, and separating the spa's supply from the residential network is necessary because filling the pools will require large volumes of water that should not affect local consumers.

The works will take place on Brazilor Street, with water supplied from the 'Montana' tank near the hotel of the same name. The execution contract was signed this week with Zoldut Kft., with an investment value of 1,362,745.91 RON. The project is expected to take around seven months and will be financed from the local budget.

'We are pleased to support this long-awaited project for Covasna, as a wellness center is clearly important for tourism. For Hydrokov, the priority is ensuring uninterrupted water supply to the new center. The challenge is the high altitude of the building, which requires increased pressure. It is also essential to separate the population's network from that of the wellness center, because filling the pools will occasionally require significant volumes of water, and this must not disrupt daily life in the city,' said Hydrokov general manager Kozsokar Attila.

Construction of the spa building began in autumn 2023 with support from the National Investment Company. It was initially expected to be completed last year, but delays in payments and technical adjustments pushed back the deadline. Mayor Gyero Jozsef said the contractor continued working even during payment delays, and the building is now about 80% complete.

'If financing from the state budget continues consistently, I am confident the work can be completed this year,' the mayor said.

He added that the future spa center will change the city's 'tourism paradigm', helping Covasna attract not only retirees, as in the past, but also younger visitors and families.

'This project will benefit both locals and tourists, adding value to a resort currently focused mainly on health and recovery tourism. We must also open up to another segment - younger tourists and families who might spend several days here and bring new revenue to the resort,' he said.
