Pulitzer Prize winner Anne Applebaum - in Romania; to participate in EFOR 2026 report presentation
Anne Applebaum, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and one of the most renowned historians and journalists in the world, will be in Romania to meet the public on Wednesday and Thursday at two events to be held in Bucharest and Timisoara.
The well-known journalist will take part on Wednesday, from 10:00, in the Aula of the Carol I Central University Library, in the presentation of the 'EFOR Annual Report 2026. Democracy and Civil Society in Eastern Europe,' produced by the Expert Forum (EFOR).
On this occasion, Anne Applebaum will have a dialogue with Expert Forum President Sorin Ionita about the trajectory of democracy in the region, Litera Publishing House informs.
During the event, the volumes Autocracy, Inc. The Dictators Who Want to Run the World and Red Famine. Stalin's War on Ukraine, recently published in the Kronika collection of Litera Publishing House, will be launched in Romanian.
The books analyse the mechanisms of dictatorship and repression, highlighting similar techniques of control and brutality used by totalitarian and authoritarian regimes both in the past and in the present.
The event will take place with the support of the Carol I Central University Library and the National Museum of Romanian Literature.
On Thursday, from 18:00, at the invitation of the West University of Timisoara, Anne Applebaum will participate in a dialogue with journalist Marian Voicu. The event, entitled 'Why Democracies Turn Against Themselves,' which will be held in the Aula Magna of the West University of Timisoara, proposes a clear-eyed analysis of the fragility of contemporary democracies, the rise of authoritarianism and the responsibility of free societies in an international context marked by tensions and profound transformations, Litera Publishing House informs.

Anne Applebaum is a historian and journalist, a contributor to The Atlantic and a senior associate at the Agora Institute, Johns Hopkins University.
She is the author of several history books that have become reference works on Eastern Europe, including Gulag. A History (Litera Publishing House, 2023), winner of the Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction in 2004, Iron Curtain. The Crushing of Eastern Europe, 1944-1956 (Litera Publishing House, 2016), winner of the Cundill Prize for Historical Literature, and Red Famine. Stalin's War on Ukraine (Litera Publishing House, 2026), winner of the Lionel Gelber Prize and the Duff Cooper Prize.
These are joined by the volume Twilight of Democracy (Litera Publishing House, 2021), which became an international bestseller and in which she analyses the attraction some Western intellectuals and politicians feel towards autocracy.
Another volume signed by her, Autocracy, Inc., published in 2024 (Litera Publishing House, 2025), examines the network of dictatorships - Russia, China, Iran, North Korea, Venezuela, Zimbabwe and others - that work together to support one another, preserve their power and undermine the democratic world.
