Vianden Castle Museum to host 'The Artistry of Easter Eggs in Romania' exhibition
The Knights' Hall of the Vianden Castle Museum will host, during the Easter season, the exhibition 'The Artistry of Easter Eggs in Romania,' the Dimitrie Gusti National Village Museum announced.
Open from 29 March to 15 April, the exhibition of decorated eggs from the Village Museum's collection will be complemented, starting on 12 April, by a series of egg decorating workshops led by folk artisan Elena Aneci, who masters the wax-resist technique specific to the Bucovina region, handed down within families from one generation to the next, according to a release posted on the museum's Facebook page.
'We have held many such exhibitions abroad, four or five each year. Last year we had to find other means of communication because, after the theft of the ‘helmet,' we were no longer allowed to organise such exhibitions featuring heritage items. This year we are travelling with ‘The Artistry of Easter Eggs in Romania,' our first exhibition abroad this year. We will present not only information about the art of egg decorating, but also about its significance in Romanian traditional culture. As always, we hope to attract many visitors,' Village Museum manager Paula Popoiu told AGERPRES on Thursday.
She added that she will deliver a lecture on the art of decorated eggs at the opening, while artisan Elena Aneci will hold a first workshop dedicated to the theme of the exhibition.
The workshops will last approximately one and a half hours, with a maximum of 10 participants per session.
The schedule is as follows: Monday, 13 April - two workshops, Tuesday, 14 April - three workshops, Wednesday, 15 April - three workshops, from 10:00 to 12:00, 12:00 to 14:00 and 14:00 to 16:00.
The minimum age for independent participation is 12, while younger children must be accompanied by an adult.
Few contemporary rituals carry such depth of symbolism, closeness to the sacred and connection to an ancestral rhythm as the practice of decorating Easter eggs, an ancient art that continues to survive in various forms across Central Europe. The folk craft of egg decorating has reached artistic and aesthetic refinement and is still actively practised in certain regions of Romania, being protected and promoted as part of the national intangible heritage, the Village Museum points out.
Organised by the Dimitrie Gusti National Village Museum, the Embassy of Romania to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and the Romanian Cultural Institute, the exhibition will be open daily in March between 10:00 and 17:00 and in April between 10:00 and 18:00, admission being included in the castle entrance ticket.
