‘Balanchine's Legacy' International Ballet Gala, on stage of Bucharest's Palace Hall
The ‘Balanchine's Legacy' International Ballet Gala, a landmark event dedicated to the work of George Balanchine - the figure who redefined the language of 20th century ballet and laid the foundations of modern American ballet - can be seen at the Palace Hall in Bucharest on Wednesday as of 20:00.
According to the website salapalatului.ro, the event, organised by Ars Gratia Regalia, brings to Bucharest principal dancers from legendary companies - New York City Ballet, Paris Opera Ballet, Houston Ballet and Royal Danish Ballet - in a programme made up exclusively of original choreographies, presented with the rigour inspired by the George Balanchine Trust.
Sara Mearns and Tyler Angle of the New York City Ballet will perform the Pas de Deux from ‘Diamonds,' set to music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, and the Pas de Deux from ‘Cortege Hongrois,' set to music by Alexander Glazunov - two moments that express the defining contrasts of Balanchine's creation: purity of form and the splendour of imperial tradition.
Artists from the Paris Opera Ballet, Hannah O'Neill and Germain Louvet, will dance ‘Who Cares?' and ‘Sonatine.' The first piece, set to music by George Gershwin, blends jazz and the energy of Broadway with classical elegance, while ‘Sonatine,' set to music by Maurice Ravel, explores French delicacy and refinement.
Karina Gonzalez and Angelo Greco of the Houston Ballet will perform two special moments: the Pas de Deux from ‘Rubies,' music by Igor Stravinsky, part of the triptych ‘Jewels', and the Pas de Deux from ‘Theme and Variations,'music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Together, the two pas de deux illustrate the duality of Balanchine's art - between classical rigour and stylistic freedom.
From the Royal Danish Ballet, Caroline Baldwin and Alban Lendorf will perform a Pas de Deux from ‘Apollo,' a ballet created in 1928 to music by Igor Stravinsky, which marks the birth of modern ballet. The two will also dance ‘Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux,' a work of virtuosity and pure joy created by Balanchine in 1960 to a rediscovered score by Tchaikovsky.
